home network nightmare

Dutcho, you may like to try this link here <a href="http://www.wown.com/j_helmig/thisted.htm" target="_blank">http://www.wown.com/j_helmig/thisted.htm</a> It may just help.

Cheers will take a look. Got another Crossed cable thingy today, it's a lovley colour. I now have both pc's with there new cards and a new cable, still not talking mind so i am formatting the over pc and starting a fresh.

I might be getting carried away with myself but later I need another pc for another room, can i still use the existing crossover cables ?

If you have more than 2 PCs you'll need a hub.

You normally connect PCs to hubs with straight through cables - not cross overs. I suppose you could use a connector to connect a cross over cable to another crossover cable, thus making one longer straight thru cable.

Sorry the suggestion about putting the PCs together with a replacement cross-over didn't work.

I hope reinstalling helps, but I've never had all of these problems networking ever.

Let us know how you get on.

On the "today" page of <a href="http://www.scan.co.uk" target="_blank">www.scan.co.uk</a> this weekend, they're selling 3 x NICs, a hub and 5 metre cables for 49 pounds. May be it's a shame you didn't go for this!

tryed the format thing but still no joy. There must be something really easy that keeps getting over looked.

What I have noticed is that on one machine in the adapter type properties you cannot select any driver type but on the other you can select enhaced mode 32bit. Does this mean anything.

Lets see just how many pages we can get on this thread before I finally work it out. I have altered my signiture to network dunce incase nobody noticed.

dutcho try your e-mail m8

Dutcho M8<br />I was going to suggest something “simple” as you put it. Now that you have formatted, have you re-enabled File&printer sharing? And have you actually shared a file to the network? But you no doubt have done. I was going to suggest that before you formatted, as it might be that you had two new computers as far as the network was concerned (with having two new NIC’s).

But if you want something more meaty…<br />Some PCI cards get conflicts with IRQ steering & it does not show as a conflict in Device Manager. So take a look here: <a href="http://www.wown.com/j_helmig/cardpci.htm" target="_blank">http://www.wown.com/j_helmig/cardpci.htm</a>

Pay particular attention to the articles (links) at the bottom of page.

When PCI bus IRQ steering is enabled, Windows dynamically assigns or "steers" PCI bus IRQs to PCI devices. If there are IRQ conflicts between PCI devices, you may need to disable PCI bus IRQ steering to determine where the conflicts occur.

Hope this is some help to you m8.

funny you should say that cos on the boot up screen the display and the network seem to share the same IRQ thingy, did not pay attention to that cos there where no conflicts. Problem is now I have messed about so much with one machine that I cannot even get a logon screen when I restart windows. Oh well back to the drawing board.

Getting to be like a favourite soap this. Cant wait for next episode. I keep following it. Sure hope theres going to be an happy ending.

I had that trouble with the IRQ's had to get an external modem sorted it out <img src="wink.gif" border="0">

Sorry to keep you all waiting but I need to get the decorating finished so I wont be able to try anything till the weekend. The IRQ that it is clashing with is the on board graphics me thinks.

I love a soap opera...

Right M8 my 10p worth.......

Are both systems on win98/me ????

If they are the try the following...

Go to control panel...This is same on both systems....

Select network from it...

Go to the section where it says identification...

make sure they are both called WORKGROUP

Go back to general settings and enable file/printer sharing....<br />install ipx, & netbui & tcp/ip protocols

reboot system

select the icon MY COMPUTER on desktop and open

right click on hard drive(s) and select sharing from menu...if you dont share any drives you wont see the other system...

select read only option and then apply this makes them available over the network... you can also share cd/dvd drives too....

ideally both systems should be running the same os, ie win98se

the irq sharing should not be a problem, you can always disable assign irq for vga in the bios if it does silly things....

<br />select NETWORK NEIGHBOURHOOD and hopefully you should see your computers

If you really want to you can set your own irq's to each card without windows setting them, are they plug and pray or manual settings on the nic's, sometimes it is better to set your own especially if you have any legacy(peripherals that need to be set up manually as they are not PnP compatable) devices. This does not just apply to the nic's, but any other legacy device on your system could be using the same irq as they have to be set manually on the cards. regards Billy

Some info so little time, I'll keep plugging away and you lot keep add bits. Well get there in the end.

Anyone who as not followed this exciting plot from the start here the story so far.........

One machine with Me and the other with 98se, there was a huge tiff and machine a would not longer talk to machine b.

<br />Both machine bumped there heads and woke up a shower not remembering anything (they got formatted and new nic's installed).

Machines still don't talk to each other................. ( the story goes on)

If your not using a hub you need a cross over cable to connect both pcs M8

Allroad m8 i am on to my second cross-over cable ( in case the first one was broken). Red Devil I have input your 10p worth word for word but nothing.

I am a bit unsure about this possible pci steering lark, anyone want to talk me through it ?

Dutcho <br />try xp on both machines it is supost to set it up for u

Dutcho I have borrowed a home network book and I will have a look and see if it gives any suggestions
