home network nightmare

This is what happened . . .

Sound card driver loaded okay under Windows ME, but no sound.

Took the card out. Put it back in again.

Powered up - now I get sound.

The same thing happened to me with my PCI LAN card - similar to your fault. My problem basically is the seating of the motherboard, which is too low for the cards.

I guess you've tried removing the LAN card and reseating it back into the PCI slot? Does the card look as though it's seated properly when it's in the PCI slot? Have you tried other PCI slots?

Yes I have tried other slots, I have noticed that I need to tweak the card to the side to get the screw in. And yes I have tried without the screw to ensure the card is located right.

Hmmm. Are we running out of things to try. I had an obscure fault years ago with an ISA card, and the fault lay with one of the tracks on the motherboard being cut, so -5v wasn't going down the bus. I wonder if it's some strange problem like that. Seems strange that you've tried different cards / card slots, and nothing works.

If you like, I don't mind sending you (yet another) LAN card for you to try - an Intel one, which you might have more success with.

Thanks m8 I will let you know. Going to try yet another format and then remove all including all internal cards and restore it. Then I will try installing the network without any other software on. Hope this works. Will let you know.

Right use my reload cd and reinstalled the lot, got lots of blue screens so i upgraded to xp. Installed network card, all well. Altered ip ect.... detected cable being plugged in but still i cannot see other machine. Its time to call it a day until I get round to upgrading my pc and then maybe I can sort it then.

I cannot even install the old novell atheme card as xp does not know what it is and I dont have a driver disk for it.

Any more visions of hope please let me know.

Right formatted AGAIN !!! Installed 98se and old novel card downstairs and new nic upstairs, got the network to run, yahoo I thought.

Next installed XP and the f**k**g network card has disappeared. Anyone got some drivers for an old Novel Anthem 2000 Compa card ?

I think if I had some drivers on a disk it may work as XP does not have this card listed so will not have these drivers.

Thanks to all. With a big thanks to davidh and greekpig who have stuck by my cause. Greekpig has provided a more compatible network card and this has solved all the problems I have been up against.

I wonder if this is a all time record or have we had longer threads ?

You should all now go to greekpigs site and sponser him in his quest for charity.
