Cross EPG/Internal Flash

I use version 306 on a Vu+ Duo with Blackhole. I have never had the problem of it defaulting to internal flash and only once has it not updated the EPG itself, even a manual download would not update the data. I discovered the crossepg.descriptors.db file had grown to a huge 60+MB. I deleted that file (actually all the contents of the /media/*/crossepg folder) and it started to update properly again.

So it may be worth keeping an eye on the size of the db files in the /crossepg/ folder and flush them occasionally.

I do reboot the box with cron daily just before doing the CrossEPG timer update and run the lsk free memory plugin to try and minimize any problems.

im thinking of given rytec epg ago, what im trying to find out is what do i do with crossepg folder on usb stick and the epg.dat on root of usb stick do i just delete them, and if i go back will it make those folder again without any problems.

just delete it ?

if you use opentv again it should re populate

:)

It'll just get recreated if and when you decide to go back to opentv :)

well i changed to rytec epg and it used the same folders as before look for yourselfs

probably because crossepg is the programme
opentv/rytec are the epg providers ;) so it just uses the crossepg programme folder to store the epg I would say

Exactly right m8

If you decide to stick with rytec it might be as well to uninstall crossepg altogether and just use the rytec plugin itself,

But in general rytec can be a bit flakey at times

I'm going to give it a try and see how I get on with it, see if I get same error's as before it stops updating after a couple of days.

What do you mean by flakey at times m8, could you explain a little more please.

he means as its online based can go down, and needs to be kept updated, then issue server going off, but mostly its fine so credit to them

It won't harm to try can always go back to opentv, only take seconds, just one thing anyone know what time he updates his server.

Martin Ive explained all this many times on the phone about rytec :(

also with rytec if there are freq changes or new channels added you have to wait for rytec to update the epg data his end

yes i know you have i'm just trying it see if i get same trouble as opentv which i did this morning, so that tells me its not opentv as you said it was, will see what happens tomorrow see if it fix's itself.

Rytec creates his updated file(s) at 04:00am, so recommends that you do the update around an hour later, when I used to use xmltv I had it set to something like 05:45am.

As Rat has pointed out when there are frequency changes it can take a day or 3 for Rytec to make the changes before they ripple through to you.

If you use xmltv you can manage these frequency changes yourself if you like, you can download the channels and source file from rytec.be put them into /etc/epgimport and then whenever a frequency changes just edit the channels file yourself.

Rytec relies upon the availability of epg data from the internet, if he can't find a source for the epg then you won't get any epg data for that channel, also the epg text can differ from what the actual channel has, typical example of this is for Sky Movies the rytec epg will normally have the name of the film and then in brackets the year in which it was made, when change to that channel and then look at now and next the year will magically disappear.

what it never updated today ?

if its still the same as when I used rytec on the TM800 the servers had used all its bandwith up by the weekend and usually up again by monday
:)

so at the end of the day which is the best to use, one of them has to work correctly.

like I said OpenTV is fine if you reboot or put into deep standby a couple of times a week :) no real hardship doing this really
the danger of it reverting to internal flash has now been fixed

tbh at the end iof the day these are clone boxes that use 3rd party plugins you either put up with it or have no epg ;)

But not everyone is getting the problem, your way is just a work around surely there has to be a fix so we don't get epg not updating, some members don't get it at all wiz569 has had his running 3 weeks now not an issue why, what has he done that we haven't.

The only thing that I'm doing differently that I know of is not having TS panel installed
