Totally New to Newsgroups

Hey Guys

Finally decided to take the plunge.

Got me Alt.Binz v0.25.0. I will use the one off fee on Astraweb to give me 250GB download.

I have installed Alt Binz, but I dunno how to search for anything. I have tried the search button as well as the individual search icons for XPat, newsleech etc. Nothing is showing up.

Do I need to add a server in order to be able to use the search facility?

Am I right in thinking that all I need to do is pay for a newsgroup and then use this binary newsreader to find a "nzb" which is basically another term to say the file I am looking for?

Any quick advice before I go ahead and spend some money will be helpful as I have had it with torrents.

EDIT: Found this site, any good for searching? Or should I stick to Alt Binz (once I get it to work): h**p://***.newzleech.com/

If you have a better suggestion for which newsreader or newsgroup to use or method of downloading, please share :)

if you have set ur client up properly as per astroweb website

goto a site like this

i personally use newzbin bargain at 25p a week

anyways if ur familiar with torrents, goto the site above search for what you want download the small header like you would do with torrents,
double click on the small file and ur client should fire up and start downloading
you will need a couple of other programs like winrar, quickpar (google it its free) for fixing broken files

if you want more choice and dont mind paying 25p a week drop us a pm with an email addy and i will send you an invite to newzbin only way you can get in

Oh kool. Is that how everyone searches for files? It's no different to torrents then!!

I woz under the impression that Alt.Binz has quickpar built in. But I got no prob googling a seperate copy.

I'm deffo gonna take you up that invite mate, but I wanna see first if it's worth it by using a one off download with no yearly commitment.

How long does a 7 gig file take on 10mb BB?

NZBMatrix: NZB Usenet Downloads. NZBs Downloads ( i paid £6 for lifetime membership, you can still download without sub, but downloads are limited)

Or for the porn, if you are into that sort of stuff

I read about grabit. Sounds like a reliable newsreader as well. Will the major newsgroups give me settings for europe ssl? Is this to protect me without the need of the equivalent of peerguardian for torrents?

Ah man, what do you mean by limited for nzbmatrix? Are the connections or download speeds limited? Did you pay the sub to get unlimited speed?

I would want an indexing site which gives me full speed as well as a newsgroup and news reader sot hat I can experience the best of nzb's before making a long term commitment decision.

Astraweb gives you the speed mate, i use the $11 a month one for unlimited, nzb matrix limited means, you only get to see certain nzb's say for e.g up 25 days old, any older than that you cannot get. i have also payed the suscription and i can get anything upto 365 days old. hope you understand that.

Astraweb gives you the speed and the space your allowed to download, depending what option you payed for.

if grabit is like newsleecher then that is what downloads the file and you will have to put you astra web setting in this.

Oh goodie, that answers all my questions. NZBmatrix doesn't want MS OS's uploaded. What if I wanted to get one? Who would I go to?
 
Okay I'm downloading!!

Current speed is 1000 kB/s. Altho, the ETA is about an hour and a half which is about a day and a half quicker than torrenting! lol

Can I not get it any quicker?

So I only get 1% of my max speed? I am right in thinking that 1000 kB/s is 1 MB/s...right?

I went into setup and sorted out the connection speed, it was at 50 kB/s. Altho, changing that hasn't affected my speed.

Do I need to open my router firewall?

im on a 20 meg line and my max is 2.35MB which is 20 meg and a bit so you are maxing your 10meg line

when you get capped youll go down to around 235kb, i go down to around 500kb

thats the speed im getting on my nzb downloader, thats is me getting the max that i will ever get unless i get 50 meg bb. you also cant get any faster unless you upgrade. you are getting full speed.

I dunno wot i'm complaining about. this speed is 5-10x faster than what I been getting with torrents!

So how does newzbin differ to NZBMatrix?

Gotcha

I got the VIP membership and clicked on downlaod nzb, chrome started downloading it and I think it was downloading the actual files because the downloaded amount was going up and up past 1MB so i cancelled it!

When you click download NZB, it should download the NZB file to open in a newsreader right?


EDIT: Ignore this because I paused my download to download the NZB and it was 2.5 MB, so it's all good!
