Sensible Topic browser search problem

Hi, Hope someone can solve this for me, please? It is one problem split into two parts. I use Chrome as my main browser, no problems until lately. When I enter a search term into the browser search bar, the PC will not search! I have to put the query into the bottom search area. Today when I try to enter and text into that area or click on the start button to search through for any programme on the PC, I immediately get a black screen with a blue whirly gig in the middle. The only way to stop this is by entering CTRL, ALT & DELETE. When the task manager starts to open, the screen opens as it should but again goes to a black screen as I try to enter text into bottom search area.

Needless to say, this is stopping me from working, so any help would be appreciated.

Is it only a chrome issue? If so reinstall the browser
