Council bosses issued a document to all primary and secondary schools on how to avoid offending Muslim pupils who may still be fasting when the new term starts in September.

The tips from Stoke-on-Trent City council include distributing free school meals as packed lunches to take home and cancelling social events when Muslim parents might not be able to attend.

During Ramadan, it is compulsory for all males and females who have reached puberty to fast from dawn until sunset every day.

Some younger children also choose to fast for all or part of the month.

The council says some pupils will get up before dawn to have their breakfast and, as a result, sleeping patterns could be interrupted.

Schools are also advised to heighten staff awareness about factors affecting pupils during Ramadan.

They are told not to schedule exams or hold parents' meetings and social events after school.

Schools are also directed to avoid swimming lessons because some parents and pupils consider the risk of swallowing water too great.

They should also cancel sex and relationship education because Muslims are expected to avoid sexual thoughts, discourse and relations while fasting.

Teachers are also told that fasting children should not be over-exerted during PE lessons as they may become dehydrated.

And schools should also provide more space for prayer in school, according to the papers.

However, the document was criticised by the Campaign Against Political Correctness as an "over-bureaucratic waste of time."

John Midgley, co-founder of the campaign, said: "Instead of meddling in this politically correct way the local authority should trust the judgement of pupils, parents and teachers.

"They should be able to cater for what goes on within the schools without wasting time on an overly bureaucratic and politically correct piece of 'guidance'.

"The schools have to be even-handed in how they treat everybody and not single out certain sections of the community in how they treat them.

"I hope this document doesn't prove completely counter-productive to the aims they are trying to achieve.

"And if there's an over-zealous implementation of this guidance that may mean some pupils could miss out on activities they could reasonably expect at school.

"It's excessive, not least because during the first week of term very few pupils are even expected to sit exams."

The month of fasting is based on the lunar calendar, meaning it falls at a different time each year.

The guidance has been put together with the aid of material produced by the Muslim Council of Great Britain and was presented to the city council's Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education.

During the meeting, members were told the festival would begin in the middle of August this year, while pupils are off for the summer holidays.

But the last week of the month will be after pupils return to classes.

The move was welcomed by Rana Tufail, director of the Islamic Centre, in Shelton, Stoke-on-Trent.

He said: "People of a young age are not obliged to fast but, when their parents are getting up early to eat, children are curious and often join in too.

"Schools are usually accommodating during Ramadan, but help for pupils to continue fasting in school is a very good thing.

"Whether they continue to fast is completely up to them."

Aren't the MCGB holocaust deniers?

Didn't they sign the Istanbul Declaration supporting attacks on our troops?

Before anybody starts jumping up and down, as this Rana guy says, school already work with pupils and parents on this (and any other situations that could effect the children).

All well and good writing the guidelines but it is up to the individual school if and how they implement them and I am sure they are all using common sense when doing so.

Agreed...but "A Council" tells "A school". Who here bets this is just some journalistic trollop which was overexaggerated. Methinks this might be a PC do gooder (non muslim) trying to lick some arse and come up with a brainwave and after about 3 million pounds worth of taxpayers money has thought of this. i dont think a muslim has actually went to the council to say, please do this and that to suit our needs.

of course, if im wrong, just tell the fecker to get lost lol

x3 here buddy they are taking the piss now....
wasn't it the Australian pm a few years back basically said the same " your more than welcome but you live by our ways, if you don't like it don;t come in to our country" I think the boat that was left 200 miles of the coast didn't make it to Australia.

I'm a muslim, and i think this is pure bollocks too, if you're fasting, you make sacrifices, you have to go without food for like 15 hours, i'm sure walking past the canteen without feeling "offended" is nothing compared to going without food and drink for hours and hours. This is bullshit, i can't see how the council agreed to this! Ban swimming? What for? In case you accidentally ingest the water? FFS, it must be a drop or two, it doesn't break your fast, and for the people who can't control themselves and try to drink that shit, kids' piss an all, then they shouldn't be fasting in the first place...

Bang on Digi there are too many rules that are changed to suit the needs and beliefs of other races and/or religions Like stated above by the Australian PM " if you can't live by our rules etc then you are free to leave "

Pity over here the councils and government aren't as strong as in other countries.

Mmmm,, how many waste of money, waste of time, waste of effort projects do the council do every day that no one gives a shit about?
Yet throw in the word Muslim and all hell breaks loose .
Strange how the papers single out a Muslim story when there are probably hundreds of useless things to get a lot more pissed off about..

Ramadan has plodded along for many years without any problems and they only ones getting upset are the council yet we seem to have a need to remind Muslims that if they don't like it they can go home or fit in..

So why is it the Muslims fault because the council got their knickers in a twist?
Come to think of it why are we bothering with these "stupid" feckin news storys..

All but a few would agree with that, digidude, Most British people [and I mean real British people] are echoing those words every day when they see how they are being sidelined in favor of ethnic minorities who want a slice of our culture if it suits them., and our judiciary will bend the law, rather than upset them.
This nonsense started in the Blair days ,[remember that sleasy labour guy..with his social engineering ] ..now a very rich tory...and milking the system. Maybe our present great leaders will one day find the courage to simply say to all who come here....We are british, and we are not interested in your particular religious cultures, dont try to import them here and if your not happy with that, please return to where you came from.
But dont hold your breath.....their is not a politician with any backbone who will say that publicly.

Waw,,15 posts on a digital hack site and most of them are controversial.
Troll along ya prick..

Unless this is law, then schools are under no obligation to implement any of this. Fortunately 99.99% of school head and governors have common sense.

If you have kids try asking their school what their policies are regarding this and other bogus media shite which is published to stir up trouble for political reasons (yes you know which papers I am talking about). All schools will have their policies available for inspection (its part of ofted review), either at the school office or most these days are also published on the school website.

Of course dealing with the council is a different matter, they have political agendas so no using common sense sometimes.
