good find mick

Well I learned something from this post because I thought that LED bulbs were not dimmable.
Thanks Mick !

The only things you have to watch out for with dimmable LED is how they dim, they do not dim the same as your normal Halogen (via voltage as such), because what happens is the driver that runs them flickers them at speeds so fast our eyes cannot detect the flicker but it makes it look dimmable, or that is certainly how they used to work.

I honestly use these as off and on more than anything because the variance on dimming is a minefield, one can be brilliant, another can be terrible.

If you are using high end lighting systems like RAKO, Lutron, iLight then you should be buying one at a time and testing them on merit, I have found that some are better than others, but none really match a halogen.

Another thing to note is your existing Dimmer Switch may not be compatible with the amount of LEDS you are running... quite a few Dimmer plates have 250 or 400 watt (maximum wattage) but the problem is not the maximum wattage, its the minimum, if you have 4 spotlights on 50 watt you need at least a 250watt dimmer but if you have 4 spotlights running 9watt you need to make sure you have a dimmer that supports 20watt minimum dimmer module - maybe even 10watt as if 2 LEDS go it will not work.

The good news if your actual wall plate should be fine you will just need a new dimmer module which is quite common now for LEDS :)

@Mick and @HimHer, thanks for the extra information. It is alway good to expand your knowledge and of course increase your options, so it has been something well worth learning about !!

had some of these and replaced with gu10 48 smd as give a better spread and are much cooler to touch and so on and only use about half the power
people looking at these should also buy a 48 smd and try them both. dimmable led are down to 2 things the type of switch and the type of bulb

There is currently an offer on at Energy Efficient Lighting ? LED Light Bulbs | LEDS4LESS where if you buy 10 dimmable bulbs you get a varilight dimmer switch free. Having some experience with dimmable LED BULBS apart from the brand new Philips master range LEDS require a led specific dimmer known as trailing edge. Also a low load is needed due to the high range on most traditional dimmers being 40W to 400W so 10 x 4W bulbs would still be on full even if the dimmer is turned right down.

I have recently found that the varilight dimmers are programmable and you can actually adjust the minimum and maximum brightness levels. Am going to try to change them.
