Cctv over cat5 or cat6 anyone feedback ?

I suppose it all depends if you want to upgrade at a later date, if you run the usual RG6 with power cable your stuck to the old analogue type system camera if you run Cat5e/6 then at least you can either terminate using RJ45 and use a balun which sets you up for an easy swap out to IP/HD cams or terminate with screw type video and power baluns still on cat5e/6 and if you decide to upgrade then you cut the baluns and terminate with RJ45 as normal.

I only run Cat5e now as its easier to run through cavity's/ lofts etc.. and no need to drill a stupid sized hole in the customers wall/eaves etc.

this is what im saying a big hole isnt needed, if pre moulded ends are on the cable then they can be easily chopped off and soldered on without the need for baluns. the ends can be hard wired or the origional bnc / power connector re-attached. i see the advantage of cat5/6 in some respects but the cost doesnt make sense to me.i suppose it depends on the application of the system. an anolouge home system has no need for cat5/6 but for a commercial premesis of course.

I see your point there if your happy to stick with an analogue system but most new products now seem to be Cat5/RJ45 where the DVR now powers the cameras, I suppose if people are happy with a little light soldering job then i cant see the issue but then again why not buy RG6 cable with power its about the same diameter as shotgun and can still be manipulated quite easy but not as easy as Cat5e/6.

The price of cat5e is not as great as what it once was and often you get more for your money compared to buying pre-made cable with BNC and power adaptors, I just dont facy doing a bit of light soldering when i am around 10m high up a pair of ladders :proud: LOL

If not doing ip cams I am still unsure how cat5/6 with baluns is better? A bit of solder sorts the connections and or small or large holes in the wall. It's definitely more expensive but don't see the quality improvement . Especially for home use.

The reason I used Cat5 was when I connected my PTZ Dome I run the video, power and connected the RS485 to the controller all through a single Cat5 cable, then I just used the rest of the kit I had to wire up 3 statics, over all I am well happy with the results, but, and a BIG but, I am only a home enthusiast :)

yes thats what i mean if there is a need for it its worth the extra cost. but fair enough i was just making sure im not missing something.

Well well well what do ya know !!! :(

Got a pair of Baluns off eBay 271266506491
Run all the wiring etc. Plugged them in an ..... Nothing. Not even static on screen lol

Unplugged them and tried a normal patch lead (yellow, red and blue) and nothing.

Tried the camera on the original wiring and it works fine.

So I did what was suggested before. Cut he original wire and solder it lol

Hate to sound stupid.... but how did you wire up the cat 5.

UTP (Normal patch cable) uses the same layout each end. where as crossover leads use different layouts at each end....

Ebay add says works with UTP so if you have a existing pre molded cable lying around (whats supplied by VM/Sky etc) check them on a small distance..

if no luck try a crossover lead just in case there wired differently. if no luck with either send the blauns back as faulty

Anyone recommend a decent 960h dvr with 8 channels. Must do audio in from 1 cam. 2 would be nice.
Ty :)

Domar Blue 8 Channel CCTV Audio DVR Alarm Input Web & Mobile Access | MD8045N | Domar Solutions - the CCTV Specialist

i have the 4 ch version of the one in the link and it serves me quiet well. there are a few on that site also. check if the price includes a hdd or if you want to use your own. the only issue i have had that im currently working on is for some reason the file sizes seem to change on ther own for the recordings. not really a huge issue but i am trying to get to the bottom of it. i havent lost any footage and i considder the footage to be quiet good.

here is a link to my cctv Web Application Manager password - test . the second cam needs refocusing and a shroud but that is nothing to do with the dvr. bare in mind theses are live images the recorded ones are much better.

Cheers people I shall look at them :) not sure what's good an not tho tbh away from the known brands.
