I've used a trickle charger several times over the years to recharge flat car batteries, and have always left the battery terminals still connected to the battery.

Never had any problems, but I keep reading that you should really disconnect the battery terminals before using a charger.

Any thoughts?

Not quite the same but ive a couple of Motorbikes that are on trickle charge permanently and i never disconnect the batteries as it to much hassle when i decide to got out for a blast.

Would only really be an issue if there was a short circuit in the wiring. Even then would hardly be an issue as
1/. You would already be aware of it
2/. Limited current on trickle charge.

You can never completely rule out the possibility of a fire but I see the disconnecting of the terminals pretty much the same way I see the wearing of a hard hat in a field, totally unnecessary.
