The 1000 and 2000 series box use non-standard IR codes. Not really sure what that means but to control the box from a Tivo a convertor is needed, but not needed for the 4000 series box. What device are you looking to connect the transmitter into?

Just done my 1st 250 an hour ago so might not be the answer you're looking for. If you want to clear all settings the before an update "Ambit config tool 096" will wipe all settings.

If anyone is following this, connected to a Desktop PC without the USB to Serial lead and I can now access the modem. So it's either a dodgy USB lead or drivers that came with it. So I could see the text from the modem, just not able to enter the P. Without USB lead it's worked first time.

Got the same problem, using USB to Serial to a MAX232 from TMC. I get all the text scrolling through on modem boot ending in "Console is Disabled by Vendor Profile". At boot there is actually a 2 sec pause after "Enter '1', '2', or 'p'" and as soon as I press any key it start to scroll...

No, you leave the cable disconnected while in the EM and then insert the funcard and let the stb reboot.

Have you tried removing the red jumper? If you've got a card programmer you can update the netid using a fun card.
