Hi Guys

Trying to setup Timeshift on my new Zgemma STB.

So far I have managed to setup recording on a Hitachi 1000Gb HDD and its working fine. I have read somewhere that Timeshift recording should be setup on a different device so I have installed a small 2Gb micro SD card from an old mobile. I dont know how to format this card or how to program the box to send timeshift recordings to this card. I have since noticed that in the setup of the HDD that there is a directory on the HDD called media/hdd/timeshift so maybe the micro SD card is mot needed at all? What do you all think?

In the Timeshift settings, as soon as I enable the Auto Start and save, I get this message "The directory
media/hdd/timeshift/ is not a Ext2, Ext3 or Ext4 or NFS partition. Please make sure to select a valid partition type" - I do not know what this means. Any explanations please - English preferred!

Also in the quest to get timeshift working I read that I had to go into VIX and setup a "Swop File". I have done this although I have absolutely no idea what a swop file is or what it does, but it hasn't helped. In case it is important the swop place is /media/sda1/swopfile. The file size is 256mb, the tickbox to enable swop is ticked and status is active.

I'm off now to look on Amazon for an idiots guide to Zgemma but I expect its bee sold out too

I would not use a small sd card its of no use stick with the timeshift setup on the HDD

And dont forget to setup the timeshift recording paths.

Thanks for the quick reply Ferret - do you mean that the default recording path is not correct? If so where can be edited.

You will need to format your HDD to EXT4. Windows does not support that format so you will need a third party formatting tool.
Goggle "mini tool partition free edition 9.1"
After you format the HDD you will need to mount it.
You will find that in "setup then vix"
Then reboot box.
Setup your EPG download time to roughly 05:45
Set you bouquets time to 05:30
Then set your timeshift to auto start after 30 seconds.

Just scroll to timeshift settings then and press ok then make sure the timeshift path points to the hdd and start it in the same menu.

Not sure I understand. I have the HDD working, its getting the timeshift working that's the problem. I have been advised to forget about timeshift recording to a micro SD card and instead use the existing timeshift sub-directory on the HDD (/media/hdd/timeshift/) but so far no joy

follow @Ferret instructions.
If it does not work mount the HDD.
On post #1 you mentioned the box did not read it due to it NOT being EXT4 format.
Thats why I posted for you to format it with additional info.

Have you mounted the HDD yet?

Thanks for your help - again. No the HDD was not mounted. I have gone into the VIX settings (Mount Manager - photo attached) and other that the HDD showing up as a 976 Gb USB, the Timeshift seems to be working!

Regarding your previous post
Setup your EPG download time to roughly 05:45
Set you bouquets time to 05:30
where can I find these settings? Also when I set your timeshift to auto start after 30 seconds. I still get "The directory media/hdd/timeshift/ is not a Ext2, Ext3 or Ext4 or NFS partition.

Bought this box allegedly setup and ready to run but now I am so p**** off now trying to fix various programming defects I wish I had just bought the box and programmed it up myself with some help from you guys. I might still default it and start from scratch again.

Any experience or views on Wooshbuild??

have you set the location as a bookmark and then pressed green to save location

First go to setup/system/EPG/crossEPG/openTV providers and select openTV 28.2e.
Then download. Now you have selected your provider you can now set it to download daily.
That is in crossEPG/config then you will see a time you can download it.

Autobouqets.
Setup/service searching/autobouquets maker/config you will see it in there.

this issue.......
I still get "The directory media/hdd/timeshift/ is not a Ext2, Ext3 or Ext4 or NFS partition......

That is because you have not formatted the HDD to EXT4.

Yes have done that

You have me beat mate.
All instructions i gave should work. I have setup dozens of zgemma boxes running VIX.
Please double check the HDD is formatted correctly in the mount options. It should say EXT4.

It sounds wrong to format a 1TB HDD and have 976GB left.
After format you should only have around 880GB.
The box will ask you to reboot you should allow it to reboot.

Thanks again

OK I have done the first 2 tasks concerning crossepg and autobouquet maker. My epg only shows the first 4 or 5 FTA channels but I'm not too bothered about that.

Regarding the HDD, It is actually recording programs OK it was always the Timeshift feature I had trouble with. However I am happy to re-format if that will help. So when I went to Initialise the HDD again I get this error message: "Error Unmount: cannot unmount/media/sda1 device or resource busy" Then I went back to the Mount Manager and pressed the yellow Unmount button and got "Cannot un-mount the partition - make sur it is not being used for swop or record/timeshift paths"

Not going to spend any more time on this today. Today is our summer and time for beer. Still thinking about defaulting the box and installing another system - I will canvass about this with other Newbies in a new thread. Thanks to all

Yes 976.56Gb. It says Type: Ext 4R/W but its showing it as a USB device not a HDD ??

Turn off Timeshift, reboot box and then try to unmount and then initialise via the menus.

Initialise just reformats (erase) drive to ext4 (normally) and then mounts automatically afterwards. No need to do anything else. Well in theory.

Is USB HDD powered via USB port or does it have a separate power adapater?

i am sure on a previous post somewhere you said that you utilised the swop file feature?

there's no need to use this on your box and might be causing you problems

I recommened you just do a fresh flash with openvix.
There seems to be to many things messed around with. Either by yourself or the person who set it up at the start.
Everthing you need is on here mate. You could be up and running within an hour.
I recommend openvix 4.1
(some getting issues with 4.2)

Remember to backup cam before you flash bx
