well to be honest guys if your stupid enough to be flouting the system you deserve all you get at least give something back then your at least not at the to[p of the list of susspects are you ....

my opinion doesn't mean much but hey i dont care.....

thing is, if they did come to the house with the police, could u just not whip the smartcard out, put it in your wallet and just say youve been using the box for freeview? as im sure the police wouldnt view the cab with the engineer when there testing the line? and you could always argue the toss if youve got no card in the box? just my 2 cents, probably wrong, but there it is :)

Theres a hell of a task prooving this. Personally i dont think they are interested at all. I have never really seen a post about anyone getting nabbed in the time ive been here.

Wow, i cant believe people are getting worried.
I have been off the cable seen for ages but was there in the beginning, all cable companies monitor the bandwidth in a particular local sub system, back in the early days when the modems were first hacked people were getting knocks on the door because they were taking all the bandwidth up and legit customers were suffering. They would then investigate who was taking the bandwidth. Ther was no cloned modems back then we just changed the parameters on the modem at boot up. Cable would just replace your modem with another.
All cable feeds even when you dont subscribe have the tv delivered, your equipment just decodes the streams, as long as your box doesnt talk back then you havnt got a problem end of story. If you have free interent withought a subbed modem then your just asking for trouble imho.
People get caught by having talking to people down the pub telling them they have free cable etc, not becasue they see you have a box with no subs.
I havnt read the whole thread so not sure this has been covered but thats how it is.

Hi may be off topic a bit but i have been reading about Virgin clamping down on illegal Downloads and this new 3 strikes and your out rule they are gonna implement .2 warnings and cut off services

""The ISP is working with music industry body the BPI on a pilot scheme targeting illegal downloaders. The trial, which marks the first time a British internet company has clamped down on illegal file sharers, will be in full swing within a couple of months and complies with the government's proposed legislation for a 'three-strikes and you're out' rule. Offenders will be issued with a warning letter, followed by an internet suspension if they don't comply. If they ignore the warning and continue illegal downloading, their access will be completely disconnected.""

It's a bit of a double standard when VM have basically said they dont want to act as Internet Police for people downloading 'illegal' content but if you 'nick' thier service (same thing in the eyes of the law) then they will pursue you??

VM have lost the plot if you ask me

Seems to me if they monitor your downloads to an extent were they can tell what you are actually downloading as they seem to think they can
I think i would take them to court for invasion of privacy as it means they are monitoring your private Data
Ie paypal online Banking so on even the files you get from here
But here is a strange one you can use Azureus vuse and download whole game to try time limited and at same time download torrent Game using same program so am i stealing or trying how do they show one way or another

the way i see it if they realy wanted to catch you they could with the proper resources allocated, the only thing that contradicts this is the fact that many cable engineers installing the equipment are offering free cable tv boxes and internet boxes, so go figure.

And thats not made up or a joke not to mention they also advise paying for basic packages and buying a box from them that will allow full package...

:)

I cant see a valid engineer offering a box to you if they knew that it would come back on them if you got caught cause the first thing you would do is say that an enginneer supplied it to you.

The problem is with facts like these, they can do this and that, the full details of how it happened never surface and theres a reason for that. Looking at the facts these boxes have been used for some years now and tbh not many come to surface or on the news of massive raids, plus if they could catch you why bother adding keyrolls and protection if they know your using it :)

It was probably Branson who started this rumour to get everyone to subscribe to the basic package lol.

Hi, When I had my V+ box installed I sat there watching them and listening to them and from the conversation one of them he was selling boxes for £100. I din't say any thing as my eurovox was in the cuboard. So engineers do sell them.
Before you ask why I got a V+ box so the wife can watch her rubbish in the bedroom, besides you don't want to kill the goose.

I myself was sold a box by someone who I later identified as an NTL Engineer. It appears most of the inspiration, info and ideas comes from engineers(ex). If Virgin arent prepared to get their house in order internally, then they deserved to be ripped off.

whats pisses me off with VM is I want my cable for the tv moved downstairs from bedroom as I have a legit box, phoned up VM and they quoted me 75 quid to move it, are they taking the piss, maximum length cable is 5 metres, as from Ebay I can get a 5 m cable with both ends connectors for 5 quid.

Thats a DIY job then.

Even VM are using agents to install who are using cheap screwon connectors. Cheeky gits also use Sky's cable if there is one thats not in use. Save them the hassle of wiring aound the house.

Has anybody considered that there will be plenty of honest people who are not subscribing to any package, but have had say a TV package that they cancelled. But, the lazy incompetant arses at NTL/VM never got round to collecting the box. So poor Mrs Miggins who is just using her old pace 1000 to watch freeview gets a knock on the door from some snotty VM employee and a couple of coppers.

Please.

I think the point is that any "equipment" configured to receive channels which should be scrambled to non-paying customers.

If the box is "as it was" then there is no charge could possibly be made .... and if all else fails pleed ignorant "Im not touching that, when the VM guy comes out he can unplug it". Know your rights :D No one can force you to detach a box, and if you flick over to MTV it will tell you that your not subscribed.

But on the origonal topic .... most people are hitting roughly the same path, and it true, like anything prohibited thing no authority in the world would waste time prosecuting users wether it be drugs, bootleg booze, cable or german porn lol. Why take down 100 users when whacking their "dealer" will A) get a better conviction and B) Put them at a loose end for a while until they find someone else.

At the end of the day by taking down traders eventually (in their eyes) there will be noone left to do the cards. Unfortunately for them, there are more and more people interested in the technical aspects of the job. I myself jumped into the scene a mere 3 years ago after a sub-concious obsession with cheating the system.

My advice always, you see VM engs kicking about that dont look like their doing an install ..... power down the box and read a book til they go away. No one says or should say that either a) you will definitely be arrested or b) you will definitely be ok with no talkback.

With a power level meter, a list of authorised Customer equipment connected, and some powers of deduction .... Im pretty sure that anyone of us could give a good guess as to how many and possibly who are the cloners and TV junkies. I only say this as a few years back I constantly called up TW with signal problems, with my hounding they went out back for a bit hooked up a power meter and disconnected each house one by one, in my eyes, the drop in power indicates the total consumption of that house. And while TV doesnt talk back it does take a load out of the feed.

Anyway im not saying yay or nay I just think people shouldn't think in absolutes, if you are cocky, careless etc then I assume given enough time you will end up with a fine, but that doesnt mean to say we should all abandon our well earned telly.

Dunno bout you lot but It took me a good effort to get my head around this and keep boxes on.

Yup I got my 1st box of an ntl enginner and he fitted it too. £150 at the time, card lasted around a year until they started key rolls. There all at it!!! same as banking staff there all at it giving away details etc... the worlds just so corrupt LOL!!!!!!!!!!!

when I had my broad band fitted the engineer could not drill a straight hole so I took the drill off him and threaded the wire through myself, he was taking chunks out of the brick work F@@K that for a game of soliders.
