Volume Control on optical out

Hi All i have recently purchased a Eurovox ex7000 hd, i could always control volume via remote control on my dbox2, however i cannot control it with the Eurovox ex7000 hd, if i use the volume, the slider bar inditcates increase in volume, however the volume stays the same.

It goes from the optical out to a av amp.

I think the optical out is just a passthrough so there isn't a way to adjust the volume , if i use dolby on in the settings (allowing multichannel) the sound keeps going off so my optical out is set at pcm (stereo) which is a bummer cause some HD channels do broadcast in multichannel , I think

I just use my a/v remote to change volume, if you are REALY lazy then change audio to mpeg audio and then the volume on the remote will work (without surround sound)
