Get a motorised 1m dish and a dreambox 500S and he can have all the porn, footy and films he can handle, all for £200 -£250. No need to worry about cams and cards but he could always get them later if he thinks he really needs these items.

so a dreambox 500s will decrypt the channels itself?? do you have to flash firmware on it??

with correct patch software it will decrypt some packages like tps(french), premiere(german), polsat, and digitv etc.

if your mate wants porn i think the technomate has a couple of extra stuff than the dream box i believe.

Just from the technical point what would the technomate do that the dreambox will not be able to do?

depends on what you mean by technically. The dream box is a brilliant toy with network capabilities.....the technomate is more user friendly and probably couldnt do half the stuff the dreambox does, but then it doesnt have a network interface and is built on a different software platform

The technomate software is bespoke and is usually patched by "3rd party" to give you what you want.

I would say the support for both is good. at the moment the technomate (model dependent) opens just a little bit more.....i think sexview and maybe 1 other

what i like about the DB is the ability to do "stuff" ;-) via the internet.

you'd probably get everything you wanted on a 80cm dish the size difference between 80cm and 1m is quite a bit when yuo consider the bracket needs to be bigger due to the large dish so it can rotare freely

which worth while sats can a 1m dish get that a 80cm aligned properly cant?

Dreamboxes are the one to go for i'd say or the later technomate which has ethernet port. Its amazing what you can do with an ethernet port on a box ;o)

C A R D Sharing is something you should look into if your thinking of having more than 1 box with 1 subscription or even no subs if your naughty and go for commercial (tut tut)

Just for Reference

I have a tm8 1500 and a Dreambox 7020, and there,s no way the tm8
is opening more channels than a Dream. Anyway m8, while making your
mates mind up, have a look at the Eagle, its based on a Dream 500 and
guys who have them, say they out perform them on certain things. I must
say that they impress me , so i,ve just ordered one for £89 and they
ship it tomorrow ( fri ) and i should get it on Saturday Morning.

....what advantages has the eagle got over the dreambox???
Answer = Price. The eagle is a low budget copy of the old dreambox design, so the only advantage over an original dreambox is price.
Hope thats not too technical :).
In my opinion this is a simple rule of thumb to help people make a decision-
~If you want as much as possible with as simple as poss & most reliablity go for a modern Technomate (Not a tm9100).
~If you want a more extensive hobby in satellite (not just simple hacked tv) then go for a dreambox based product.
Dreambox, Eagle, Relook, Dmm clone, Triple Dragon, etc do not generally offer more channels over patched Technomate receivers. What they offer are extra possibilities such as network streaming, cardshares, software add-ons, internet abilities etc.

I set up a system for a mate once who just wanted porn/footy and didn't want to get into the hobby (he has gone blind now with tennis elbow.) You have to think of support cos your mate will be on your back when he cant get his fix:) I woulld setup whats going to give you the least amount of grief and if he gets in to the game he can always upgrade.

get a motorised system 80-100cm dish with DiSEqC postioner fitted i would go for this over a fixed/monoblock setup because it will cost a little more to install but the benefits far out way the little extra cost . eg more sats no upgrading from fixed to motor (more expense)

Now the reciever you can always sell/upgrade really easy thats why i would but more effort into getting the motorised dish sorted. You need to work out what your needs are and how much support your gonna give to you mate. If he want 100% no interupted viewing he is going to have to get his hand in his pocket for original cards or a paid server. so here is my 2p's worth all personal choice.

if he doesnt mind paying alot and wants uninterupted viewing get digialb card and mct card with a dreambox 500

if he wants to pay a small amount and has broadband get a dreambox 500 and read up:) might loose a few channels now and again if broadband dies

if he doesn't want to pay anything other than for equpiment get a dreambox 500 but tell him to be prepeared for interupted and less viewing choice.

dont get me wrong i like the technomate boxes but i think the dreamboxes are great and if you like tinkering about which you must do cos your here. For about 80 you cant go wrong if you go for a cloned box just don't put a gemmini image onto it but thats another story.

hope this helps theres a lot of permations each with pros and cons, theres no better or easier way but thats why we love the game.
Si
