Right.....

I'm feeling brave (again lol) to try to overcome my fear of a soldering iron and attempt a jtag.

I do have a 2+ yr old unused soldering iron (an ebay cheapy which should do the job - Is 30W ok?)

The trouble is I have no other parts so will need to get some bits ordered. (Well I can snip off the ends of printer cables if needs be no problem unless its less hassle and cheap enough I'm sure to just buy the end). I did get some "Lead Free Solder Wire" with the soldering iron but I presume thats probably crap quality and dont want to chance problems and rather buy all teh recommended stuff :)

Is there any site you can order online all the parts needed together, like Maplins or even a specific ebay seller etc?

My console is an old Pro nonhdmi console and was banned a cpl of waves ago and has not been used since approx Jan last year.

As far as I'm aware from guides I need....

Soldering Tin
Wire
1 x LPT Plug DB25 (worth just yanking from old printer cable??)
5 x 100ohm resistors
3x 1N4148 Switching Diode
shrinking tube or iso tape

To make sure I don't fluff up and order the wrong 'type' of wire or tin or resistors etc could someone please give part numbers or links to somewhere that will give me everything I need so I can have a bash at this? :) Using whatever quality of wire etc is recommended. And of course if the soldering iron I have is unsuitable I'll order another one no problem

cheers guys

hiya,

I'm looking on maplin at the moment, but all I can see for resistors there is 2 big packs such as 480 Piece E3 Resistor Starter Pack : Resistor Packs : Maplin

also searching for 1N4148 links me to these...but in the link it doesnt mention it being 1N4148? Switching Diode : Diodes : Maplin . Alternatively it comes up with Signal Diodes : Diodes : Maplin for 1N914 but it says Signal Diode - and not Switching? Which of these is preferred if even the correct option?

Also I've just noticed that the resistor packs at maplin have 5% tolerance.....as opposed to some ebay searching 1% and 5% tolerance. Which would be better? 1% or 5%. I'm presuming 5% in thinking that it can 'withstand' a 5% change so supposedly better?

for what its worth also - the solder wire I had that comes with the solder iron says Sn:99.3% Cu:0.7%. Would that be no good?

I'm guessing from looking at maplin that the Lead Free Silver Solder may be the best to get?

So confusing looking at solder wire etc on ebay too lol as so many different options.

Also...what is best to use... the 1N4148 or 1N914? As one ebay seller is selling 25 of 1N914 for same price as 100 of 1N4148?

Well that solder is lead free as Sn is chemical symbod for tin and Cu for copper so 99.3% tin 0.7% copper.

I am like you would like to find a place where you can order all parts in one go before i attempt my jtag.

Just realised as well none of my pc's have and lpt port!!!

Can I check I've picked the right stuff?

1. Resistors - can't seem to find them by themselves on the site - but suppose pack will come in handy - http://maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=42453

2. switching diode 1N4148 http://maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=46386

3. solder - http://maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=2819 - or am I better off with the silver stuff? http://maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=34965

4. D-Sub connector http://maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=1113 - Is it YQ48C or YQ49D I need?

5. Wire....would this be the best gauge of wire to use? http://maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=6198

A couple of other questions.

6. This looks like the soldering iron I may have bought a cpl of years ago. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Soldering-Iro...Home_Garden_PowerTools_SM?hash=item3359214b9c or very near identical looking at least. Do you think its up to the job? The tip seems quite fine - but dont know how fine it needs to be :) It looks like the tip can unscrew to be replaced if a replacement head would likely be needed? The tip looks like its about this size http://maplin.co.uk/images/full/n11by.jpg

7. Another guide elsewhere mentioned the need for Rosin Flux. I presume thats this. http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?moduleno=33850 . Is it worth getting and using too? Not that I know what its for lol

Anything else I've missed?

the "lucky bag "from maplins does contain the 1n4841 diodes and all work fine for the jtag and lpt hack,i suggest you get a nikkai paralell lead, cut the lead about 4 inches down and solder the resistors to the bared wire,i had some major trouble at first, but not a single problem since i made it like this

i bought my bits from ebay, 100 resistors, 100 diodes and an lpt cable all for less than £5.50 inc postage!

got a link to the instructions for the lead m8? i can see a gap in the market here lol

You should go for it mate!

I'll 100% have one if you can include EVERYTHING you need minus solder iron i tihnk alot of people will probably want one. because you have to buy loads of resistors you should sell a few ;)

I watched a video and it seems straight forward enough ive got 2 RRoD i can practice on before I do my brand new elite depending on they send one with memory card from very.co.uk

i have everything here except the diodes, but ive just ordered 500 of them, should be here tuesday

so its a plug, 5 100 ohm resistors, 1 diode and a bit of cable for each plug, right?

you actually need 3 switching diodes I believe - 1 for the cable and 2 for the 360 board.

Also believe you need this 25-Way D-Type Boxes : D-Type Enclosures : Maplin so you can connect/disconnect it easier to pc aswell as obviously the end you solder to.... and someone elsewhere said these wires would be better Light-Duty Equipment (10/0.1) : Equipment Wire : Maplin tho to get 30 AWG wire from elsewhere as the maplin wire is stranded (forgive me as a lot of it goes over my head lol)

http://www.ep-comps.com/free60/diagrams&tutorials/XeLL-JTAG-XBR-Hack_english.pdf

that is the guide I'm using - so far down is the steps for the 2nd part where the other 2 diodes are needed. Alternatively there is 4 Step Guide To Flashing Xbreboot - Scenyx Entertainment Community That includes Rosin Flux though I dont have a clue what thats for lol

Alternatively too you could also sell the kits for those that want to be able to connect by putting an RJ45 port on the side

A instant best seller would be if you could get your head round making a usb based flasher like this guy has done.

This makes flashing a 256/512 nand a breeze....takes about 30 min for a 512 rather than 20+hrs. Same for the normal 16mb nand reduces the time taken from 30mins to 5mins (all are just approx times BTW)
There is the guys thread over at XB-Scene ....he literally cant keep up with demand. - USB-based NAND Reader - Scenyx Entertainment Community
Here is a linky to the original concept thread over at xbox hackers
USB SPI Flasher with PIC18F2455 - now with source and binaries
If you want to make some decent cash then build a load of these and you would have orders coming out of your ears.

I'd certainly be interested in one of them :)

With the USB solution - are the solder points the same for when it comes to us noobs putting it to the board...and just the connection obv different :)

cheers.

just to another q that wasn't answered. Would my 30w solder iron be fine....or do I need to get a 15w solder iron too for the job?

just looking at all the 1N4148s etc available on ebay and they all have different ma ratings and voltages and stuff. I presume it prob doesnt matter which.

And is a resistor with 1% tolerance better than 5% or vice versa?

i bought a xbox from very and got the version 2.0.7363.0 dash which i believe is jtagable just need one of these things to check its flashable if someone starts making them i will buy one from them :) (prefer a usb version lol )

on a different note is this any use to jtag do ins link here as it says for 360 and has a usb slot but i have no clue about any of this lol (just gonna break a new 360 trying lol)
