wonering if someone could help, i went looking to buy a eurovox/starview on ebay and someone advise that ntl/telewest are about to change their system on the 20th December, so no boxes will no longer work.
this is the reply to the amil I received:
1)
The people who brought you eurovox-max etc,,are already working on a new
box that will counter act what ever the big companies are planning to
do..i went to pick some boxes up today and was advised very kindly, not to
buy anymore boxes till after christmas,,,ther is definetly something being
planned to try and ruin xmas..my advice to anybody thinking of purchasing
one of these boxes is to err onthe side of caution..the boxs were there i
could have had them..i thought it was a very generuos jesture by the
supplier..it could be a rumour, but like i say be cautious with that crimbo
money

For the answer to this question we must first analyse both the hardware
and software side of things.
The hardware - the actual components within the box that process the
signal and decoding.
The software - the virtual components that process the EMMs.
If you look inside an official Pace box, and then look inside a Nokia or
Sagem DBOX2, you will see that the
chips are nearly identical! Open one up and see what I mean, you will see
it almost immediately.
The only difference is the processor.
With this in mind, if NTL/Telewest were to ever send out an attack based
on hardware then it would also
affect 100% of their own boxes; since the chips are created by seperate
manufacturers with a fixed
instruction set. It would cost the company so much in repairs that they
would go out of business.
Now onto the software side of things..
The tuner is not the one that looks at and decodes the EMMs. This is
handled by the CAMD, which is a
virtual component which is normally found within a physical card reader.
Most boxes are running EVOCAMD, MGCAMD or NEWCAMD. Now I can safely say
that the only EMMs that
these software emulators decode are those that are used for the decryption
of Nagra encoded channels.
Ie.. they can only handle the keys for obtaining the premium channels.
They are software packages. Therefore, somebody must have written them by
hand. Software can
only do what it has been coded to do, and in this case it has only been
programmed to respond to specific
EMMs. Any other EMM received by the box is processed, but is ignored
because the software simply does
not know what to do with it.
We can therefore conclude that any killer EMMs will indeed be received by
the DBOX2, and they will indeed
be looked at - but because the DBOX2 works via SOFTWARE and not HARDWARE,
these EMMs are ignored
because the box does not understand what to do with them.
EMMs are just commands, and the receiver of the EMM is supposed to know
how to react.
In the case of the DBOX2, the box only knows how to react to decrypting
channels.
DBOX2 cannot be knocked out by "Frying". They can be knocked out if
NTL/Telewest change the
way that they decrypt the channels. This is because the EMM will be
difference, and the CAMD will again not
know how to process it and will ignore it. Later images wont have this
problem as most camd's were written
for the satellite scene, where this sort of trick has been used before.
In short, the answer is no.
3)
Have you read my auction its just for info, have a read of this, if you
still want 1 let me know.
heard from a friend a rumour that ntl plans to knock out dboxes on the
20th dec?
they brought a specialist to help.
i would have thought that if they suceed then, a reflash work work?
4)Re: can dbox2 be knocked out?

i suppose it is possible if they send something down the line that frys
the chip in the box. u never know now bransons on board.
can someone please advise as i don't want to waste my money if i only have 10 days and the boxes up go the creek.
thanks
