CD & DVD help on how to burn a dvd please

I dont burn dvd's normally ( everything on usb for me) but a friend is going over to france and wanted some films to keep her grandaughter from being bored. How do i get them burnt onto DVD please. I use ashampoo free burning software, and all the files are around 700-900mb and avi format. I tried putting a film on using the menu Burn Movies > Burn a Video from a prepared folder but would not find the file. So i tried Burn Files or Folders > Create a new CD/DVD/Blu0Ray Disc and that burnt but when i put it into the portable dvd player no films will show/play.
Any ideas on what i can do as she goes away tomorrow and i dont want to let her grandaughter down.

convert to dvd and burn using freemaker video converter would be easiest...

freemaker video converter - Downloads - DigitalWorldz - Satellite, Cable, Console Forums

Click "add file" and select your avi file, then click the dvd icon on the bottom..
