I am looking at purchasing the Humax 5400z (patched). The manual mentions supporting 2 cams, what does this mean?

Also, where the model is described as patched what does this mean? If patches have been downloaded why are fun card / silver cards still needed?

Sorry for the obvious questions, thanks in advance for your help.

cams

the reciever supports other access modules to unscramble other
encryptions ie seca ,irdeto, viaccess, nagravision etc but because
the humax has a patched cam built in this does all the encryptions
for u when it states that it is patched it means that the software
relating to the cam has been altered somewhat to give it access
to all the encryptions available
and u still need a card because these will contain the nesessary
codes/files to unlock the various channels

Thanks stupot for your reply.

I am still confused about the exact meaning of "supporting two cams". Does this mean you can download additional cams (encryptions) on to the internal patched cam in the Humax? Is this what they mean by having dual cams? Also, is a cam just one encryption or can it be many? Is cam an abbreviation?

Many thanks for all your help I will get there one day.

cams again

sorry if u misunderstood the lingo cam is short for Conditional
Access Module. These are actually regarded as hardware the cams slot into the C.I ports on ur sat receiver thats short for
Common Interface. So the humax 5400 has 2 slots to take 2 cams.
Don't forget the humax has a built in cam that is patched or modified to use a better word.So the use of any extra cams is a waste of time unless u intend to get a conax cam with a commercial card. The humax is a very good machine with constant
updates for it but it is 4 years old u may well take a look at the samsung 9500

CAMS AGAIN

stupot, thanks for your answer.

All in now clear, at least for the time being.

You mentioned the Samsung 9500, does this machine allow down loads and if so, presumably it comes as patched? Are there the same number of encryptions available on the Samsung as the Humax?

Do you know if there are some encryptions that are not on the Humax (patched) that you would need to buy seperately? If this is the case do you use one of your cam slots to update your internal cam, or can the cam (encryption) be run seperately from the slot?

Thanks so far for your help.

cams

about the samsung,im sure its already patched and it can decode all the stuff that the humax can.if u ever need to re-patch the cam this has to be done via the RS232 socket on the back of the receiver then linked to a PC or laptop, but if u need to upgrade the firmware of the STB itself it can usually be done OTA (over the air).If u wish to flash a cam with different software u will need a laptop with a pmcia slot, but were going a bit deep here, if u get a receiver with a built in cam that has been patched it will save u alot of messing around just stick a funcard in the slot with the uptodate codes on it u will be ok providing you have a dish connected to it correctly lined up

Thanks again,

If it is not too dificult to explain, what is meant by "flash a cam"?

Thanks for your help

FLASHER

You can alter the software on a cam just like u can do with the built in internal ones flashing simply means altering the existing software on the cam for instance the irdeto all cam has many different versions of software to work in many receivers so if say the cam didnt work in ur machine u could flash it with different software so that it would
