Broadband speed

Can i ask for a little help here? I'm on 2mb connection but seem to only be getting a download speed of 42kb/s and upload of 25kb/s. Although it varies slightly its always round about this figure and never anywhere near the 200kb/s i was expecting.

Could some of you guys with a 2mb connection do this same test as me and let me know what your getting for the dual test.

So that we are all singing from the same songsheet, can you use testmy.net - broadband community and tools and do the dual test using server 1.

Thanks

Download :: 329 Kbps or 0.33 Mbps (40 kB/s)
Upload :: 188 Kbps or 0.2 Mbps (23 kB/s)

These tests are rarely a good indication of your actual line speed. Even on a 10 Meg connection that particular one only gave me 496kb (61KB) down and 345kb (42KB) up.

The best way to test your line speed is actually to download from local newsgroups etc using a multi thread capable newsreader. With half a dozen connections pulling stuff I can usually max the line out.

It will be rare to find any single website than can max out any multi Mb/s connection

mines way different each time and i'm on a 10 meg connection..doesn't look very acurate mate.

my speeds vary all the time .. i'm on 2mb nthell connection and
thay always seem to have problems :Cute:

Download :: 1731 Kbps or 1.73 Mbps (211 kB/s)
Upload :: 238 Kbps or 0.2 Mbps (29 kB/s)

i use telewest

i am on tiscali 2mb and here are the results

Download :: 831 Kbps or 0.83 Mbps (101 kB/s)
Upload :: 178 Kbps or 0.2 Mbps (22 kB/s)

I have found in the past these website testers are a poor indication of speed of download/upload, u only have to check 3 or 4 times in a row and u will get different results, if u search on here u will find 14 or 15 different sites that people suggest i am willing to bet if u tried them all u would get 14 different results.

to confirm your download speed is correct ie 1M, 2M 4M 10M etc use this h**p://www.dumeter.com/ program to accurately measure data through put.

then go to M/Soft web site and download Win2003 sp1, this is a 230MByte file and it should download at a steady rate which will be maxed at your download speed.

Im with NTL and had reason to ring them today because my
connection seemed slow, ive just upgraded from 2mb to 4mb
and they used this site to do a test.

http://specials.zdnet.co.uk/misc/band-test/speedtest500.html

and here are my results;-

* download start time: 1168813213031
* download end time: 1168813214984
* download time: 1.953
* download size in thousands of bytes: 500
* estimated line speed (K bits per second): 2089.1
* estimated line speed (K bytes per second): 256

Which clearly shows that im still on a 2mb connection (confirmed by
their help centre),...this was supposed to have been changed 3 days
ago!.....will be contacting them tomorrow.

not sure thats write l have 10 mb and its only showing 2.5 mb but on my news server is super fast

* download start time: 1168814705634
* download end time: 1168814707493
* download time: 1.859
* download size in thousands of bytes: 500
* estimated line speed (K bits per second): 2194.7
* estimated line speed (K bytes per second): 269

Oh thats strange, very similar stats, which obviously they shouldn't
be, but it was that test page/site that NTL used to test my
connection, so I don't what to say about that really.

NTL had not upgraded me to 4mb, but they have now.

1st 512K took 1063 ms = 481.7 KB/sec, approx 3969 Kbps, 3.88 Mbps
2nd 512K took 1078 ms = 475 KB/sec, approx 3914 Kbps, 3.82 Mbps
3rd 512K took 1094 ms = 468 KB/sec, approx 3856 Kbps, 3.77 Mbps
4th 512K took 1078 ms = 475 KB/sec, approx 3914 Kbps, 3.82 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 3913 Kbps, 3.82 Mbps

* download start time: 1168874208609
* download end time: 1168874209593
* download time: 0.984
* download size in thousands of bytes: 500
* estimated line speed (K bits per second): 4146.3
* estimated line speed (K bytes per second): 508.1

much better LOL.

Try this page rather than the other and click on "test my bandwidth".

I know the results differ, but their not far out.
first results were from here, but you've got to allow the popup
otherwise you won't see the results.

I think the one at

www.internetfrog.com

is quite accurate.

Internet frog Didn't seem very accurate to me:
Download: 3,222,376 bps
Upload: 278,728 bps
QOS: 74%
RTT: 4 ms
MaxPause: 195 ms

I'm on 24MB with Be.
Never get less than 12MB (because of distance from exchange) with other testers.

To improve your speed try going here: http://www.dslzoneuk.net/socket.php

It explains how to improve your speed by simply cheking your socket wiring, and it does improve the speed.
Mine improved by 3MB.
