I have noticed not getting more than 3bars signal with my o2 sim

Known issue with the San Fran. Basically, it is said that the San Fran shows a more realistic representation of signal than other phones, it's not that you're getting a worse signal, just a different measurement.

Apparently, switching your phone to Gen2 improves signal. Don't even bother thinking about converting to Gen2 yet!!!!

Spent the best part of the day messing with this. Think my n97 is better build wise but the OS kills it hands down.

For now this will do nicely but later I will look at getting a better android mobile, one hopefully with a propery qwerty keyboard like the n97
