Still Lost and Looking for a Better Place.
OK I am still running Widows Vista, although I may update to Windows 7 (still undecided) with this I have always used IE for the Internet Browser and now whenever I go into e-mail it informs me that I should upgrade to a "modern" browser, suggesting Google Chrome .
I have tried running Google Chrome but I just don't like the lay out and the way it works.
Am I just being an "old fart" and should persevere with Chrome ? What do you think of it ?
If you don't like Chrome, what do you use ? and what do you like or dislike about what you use ?
Basically I would really like to know what "modern" browser do you think an "old fart" would prefer !!

Funny that you should start this discussion right now, as there are two other threads bemoaning Chrome's latest update. I've been using Chrome for a number of years, as I find it doesn't seem to weigh as heavily on system resources- if you're running Vista, you'll probably notice quite a difference in responsiveness. But Google keep fiddling with it, and some of their "improvements" are not popular. I do find some sites still run better on IE, but 99% of the time it's Chrome for me.
I'm also wary of Google's prying eyes, so may well change in the not-too-distant if any more of their updates cause more grief. This should be an interesting thread!

Browser Chrome: Scroll arrows gone!!

TBH, always regarded IE as 'bloatware' lol

I run both Firefox and Chrome. Firefox I've added script and ad blockers to so I can sniff around spammy links to see what the ungodly are up to but Chrome I just run bare-bones for speed.

Yip same as above, up to recently I'd have said Chrome but I'm reluctant to recommend it now. The fact that it auto-updates is a big negative too, they implement iffy improvements & you have to accept them (or go looking for workarounds). Thinking of going back to Firefox myself.
HH.

I've been using firefox since well before it was called firefox. I've tried chrome a few times and really didn't like it. I never use IE at all, but do use the "IE tab" addon in firefox for sites that will only work in IE or need active x.

I like the addons for firefox, but you can make it bloated very quickly by installing too many. I know chrome now has addons but the ones I like don't seem to work the same in chrome.

From a security point of view chrome does seem to be the best one AT THIS MOMENT IN TIME but it alternates with firefox and IE is about as secure as a paper bag is waterproof.

As for speed I don't think there is a vast difference between chrome and firefox, with pages loading so fast these days I can't notice the 2 nanoseconds difference between them.

pale moon for me which is basically firefox but i like it better

went of chrome will the auto update feature

plenty of choice on browsers to try these days

Chrome for me atm, could'nt take to Firefox,IE was ok a while ago, get rid of Vista worst Windows OS ever made, i still use XP on alot of my machines/lappy's,will upgrade to 7/8 when i upgrade my main pc....

I prefer Firefox, but also use IE and Chrome.

IE8 and Chrome in work (XP).

Firefox, Chrome and IE10 at home (Win 7).

I run IE and Chrome vanilla. Firefox has adblock plus, URL Suffix, NoScript (but usually disabled), UK dictionary and a couple of others.

... get rid of Vista worst Windows OS ever made...

You're forgetting the much maligned Windows ME. But most will tell you to skip every other version of Windows: 3.0, ME, Vista, 8...

I like opera, can run in other modes for certain websites. Seems to give a lot of screen space compared to others. Also firefox is my other, seems to work on websites opera struggles with.

Like many others i use firefox and have for many years with some plugins (dictionary, ietab2, adblock and fireftp) and i use chrome sparingly because of the nosey aspect of gooogle but useful on occasions.

I use mainly use Firefox.
Ps, Get rid of Vista, it's total pants. :)

chrome user here but the latest update has been a real PITA, even worse they have dropped support for exchange activesync for no reason except to annoy windows users.

Also if you are a windows 8 user it can now run in a non-standard metro mode which is effectively the same as a chromebook.

I agree re. PITA updates. and that's just what you can see! Google have a rep for being a bit over-nosey, so I do wonder/worry about what goes on in the background.
I've decided to give Safari a try- it has some nice touches, and may be OK once i've de-Americanised it a bit... watch this space!

IE here Vista was crap

Vista was/is crap because marketing released it before it was Windows 7!

If you want to find out what Chrome is doing then install Chromium instead, it's the Open Source version so you can check what it's up to. You'll have to install the add-ons (like Flash) yourself.

As far as nanosecond speed difference is concerned (a post ^^^ there) - browsers without add-ons checking scripts and ads (etc) run faster than those that have them installed.

:)

I'm a google and chrome fanboy.
I run chrome on about 7 devices and it all syncs lovely together.

I use Chrome on most of my PC's, but I don't allow them to sync for two reasons- firstly different PC's have different uses- one for work-related stuff, this one for general every browsing, and another for research, so I wouldn't want three 'clones'. Also I'm a bit wary of Google's prying ways- by always signing in, you're basically saying to Google 'Look at me, this is what I'm doing, where I am, what I look at, what I buy' etc. etc.

On the prying front, get Chromium instead of Chrome - looks and feels the same but Chromium is Open Source, more 'tweakable' and you can modify the source if you don't like what it does :)

I can only echo the posts above about Google, and now they're making a play in the video conferencing market.
Not "Skynet", but definitely "Spynet", it always was. Nothing else could have funded it's early growth.

And then the advice....."put personal data in the cloud for increased security" FFS,.......I'll believe in politicians and religion first!
Wish I'd bought some shares in 2004 though.:)

Another browser alternative is Opera, a bit quirky, but it's fast and light, with a similar style to Chrome. Stay below version 12.
After that there's a bit of "mission creep".
