Virgin isn't cheaper over longrun but if you don't require anytime call package then it isn't that much more - about £30 more over 18 months with Virgin. However, if you require anytime calls then it's about £108 more over the 18month contract with Virgin.

Virgin:
£508.23 for the entire 18 month contract for broadband and landline only. Call package like anytime calls is extra £8 per month for the 18 months which means if you want anytime calls then it will cost you £652.23 in total.

TalkTalk:
£476.10 for the entire 18 months contract for broadband and lineline only. Call package like anytime calls is extra £3.75 (special offer for 18 months) per month for the 18 months which means if you want anytime calls then it will cost you £543.60 in total.

Yes. If you telephoned and went through cancellation procedure, I would expect TalkTalk to give you same discount as new customer (but you have to go through cancellation procedure).

I have to do the same (get them to match new customer offers) every year with my broadband provider and just now car insurance

You could try ringing sales team of Virgin and explain that your current provider (TalkTalk) can offer you as above and see if Virgin can do anything close.

I would just ring and ask say you wish to cancel your entire contract and you're providing them with one months notice and they normally put you through to cancellation dept (sometimes called retentions). Repeat the same to them and if they ask why tell them that new customers are getting cheaper deal than you so you have looked around and see Virgin are doing similar offer (over the 18month contract). Normally at this time they can provide discounts, etc.

Only cancellation/retentions department have more discretion over discounts/special offers.

I don't make it obvious I'm after an offer when I ring and explain (to cancellation/retentions dept) that their new customers get better deal than me and i've been with them x years hence I have looked around and xx company are doing good deals so I want to move to them

virgin broadband is good im on 50meg, i use newsgroups to download stuff but not that much the odd movie now and then, pc apps etc...but try downloading at normal hours , ie 5pm onwards till aftrer midnight and it slows right doen to around 3.5Mbps..thats the bad thing about virgin...plus the constant price rise

so you get no throtlling in the evening when downloading using newsgroups ?..at 5pm onwards?...my newsserverver does provide ssl but I've never tried it..might now

if you do decide to switch to vermin, get your own router, the ones they supply are total tosh.
I have a big network and the superdud would crap itself within minutes, but unlike sky vermin will allow you to supply your own router.
I run a netgear nighthawk (r7000) and that has been solid (but expensive).
Just switch over to modem mode on the router and you are laughing.

Just wondering what torrent speeds people are getting with VM.

I get ~4MByte/s on a supposed 100Mb connection but that is a "peak time" and using torrents.

Do VM restrict via port (shaping)? I use a custom port. I suppose they could do packet inspection.

hey @Rat Been with virgin since the ntlworld days must say never reallly had problems with them odd day when it was down but never for long, you do know you can get broadband from them and dont have to take a phone line rental?? there isnt alot of difference in price but we have the phone line and tbh we never use it to ring out just nuisance phone calls in (should unplug it really) as for your wifi issue around the house there are ways and means of doing that these days to get good wifi everywhere, i have done this before using home plugs and another router HERE you wont have to put the hub in modem mode, but there are wifi extenders and such like which is probably easier, the upload speed is better with infinity than vermin too but never had issue's with upload really just ton's of download and free upgrades again coming i pay £33 a month basic tv (tivo 500gb) 50mb broadband an a phone line.

Not bad, that would probably bring VM's deal close to TalkTalk's.

VM would have a faster upload rate than TalkTalk i'm guessing and obviously faster download rate. It's just do you think you would fall foul of their traffic management on the uploads (which obviously you upload images and all kind).

If you did fall foul and your uploads were reduced, would that be any worse/better/same as what TalkTalk's estimated upload rate is?

The guy assures me (lol) that t=since they moved over to the new company they have no caps or restrictions and that new superhubs should not have wireless issues
we will see

my uploads are dire 0.71 uploading a backup image can take 20/30 minutes mate surely Virgin will be faster lol

TalkTalk just offered to match Virgin lol too late now should of offered yesterday and i would most probably stayed tbh
