Golf MK2 Engine needs work

thanks mate. I'll take a look at the cables.

Wanna see if I can accentuate the VW logo on the rocker cover without too much work. I heard that I can get some special sticker that is heat resistant that is already cut out in VW.

The wheels are chrome rims so just need some of that tyre restore spray. Will need to do something about my rubber trims around the windows which have become dry and lost their colour

The black tyre spray that you put on your tyres will do all your window rubbers as well.Just spray some on a cloth and wipe round the rubbers.They will come up like new with that mate. Good luck keep us informed.

Few questions:

1. What sort of heat resistant paint should I use? Brush on, or spray on?
2. Do I need to take the parts to be painted out of the engine (including the rocker cover)? I'm guessing yes so that other parts don't get painted on accidently.
3. Do I need to get an original sump pan and sump pan gasket or can I get away with a copy?

Hi Pimped get the spray its easier How to Paint Classic Car Engine Parts | eHow.com

Can you not get your sump from a scrapyard? as long as you put a new gasket on and replace the sump plug it will be fine. Give it a coat of aluminium paint before you fit it that way it will look brand new mate.

dont think they want to sell a sump off an engine,sell you an engine ok lol,motor
factors wil do replacement sumps as they do get whacked alot due to low suspension,high temp silicone to make the gasket and a scraper to clean block new oil and filter to refill,while sump is off check strainer is clean and not stuffed
keep a note of engine code to get same replacement part

Sorry mate, didn't know you had posted. Thanks for the tips, will keep them in mind when changing the sump.

WHen you say use a scraper for the block head, is that for the inside?

A new sump from eurocarparts is about £50!! Rip offs

This is my issue, my sump is pissing out oul. I witnessed it first hand. There's a hole on the side which is pissing out oil like blood from an artery when the car is running!

The car is also jumpy while running (not driving, just stationary), my neighbour reckoned it was due to the hole creating a loss of compression. Is that right? The jumpiness was like misfires

Need to find a breaker who can gimme the sump without having to buy a whole engine. just need to do the main things first before i consider a "new" engine.

Could you not just have the sump tig welded? I had my sump on my Polo Gti tig welded and cost me around £35

Dunno where to get it welded. Been asking around for a while. Anywhere or any types of people I should target? Plumbers perhaps?

I got Q-Bond (that powder that turns hard to bond metal when a liquid is applied) if that might help?

Have a look at this they specialize in your car.Dont forget the gasket or sealant as well as the sump. Drain the oil out of your car and don't start it up till you have rectified the problem and changed your oil and filter.

Looked at them before but the 1.3 was not showing anything. so I decided to just call them and got a good price:

Sump = 21.38 (Sump plug already screwed in he said)
Gasket = 3.95
Delivery = 4.95

Total = 36.34 (inc vat)

How does this sound? Good deal right? It's a sump made for 1.0 to 1.3 golfs, german make.

Should I attempt this myself or get a mechanic to change it? IF a mechanic does do it, should it cost me no more than £5 - 10 labour?

That is a good price mate as for attempting it yourself I do not know your capabilities. firstly have you got a torque wrench if so you are almost there. Drain the oil and then undo the sump bolts start from the middle and work outwards like a clockwise motion.when you put the new one on its the same sequence put the bolts in finger tight then use your torque wrench to tighten the bolts to the correct torque in the same order. goodluck

This is the vw jetta not the golf but it gives you an idea of what to do.

I would love to do this. Problem is that I don't have a torque wrench and although I'm handy, I don't wanna screw things up with messing with the gasket.

VWSpares had run out of stock by the time I managed to get through to them. But germanautoparts.co.uk have what I need in stock and for cheaper! Just checking with their sales team which part I need for my car. I should have it before the weekend rather than monday as was the cas with vwspares

Great news mate I hope you get it sorted soon good luck.The garage will probably do your car in an hour or two and hopefully cost you no more than 50 pound

Thanks mate. I forgot that I had a Haynes manual so I checked it out for sump removal and refitting and it seems the hardest part is disconnecting the driveshaft and scraping off the old gasket.

I got an oil sump from GSF and a gasket. I just need to get my hands on a torque wrench and an oil filter removal tool.

Sound about right? I even got a hydraulic jack and axle stands :)

An old way of removing an oil filter is to drive a screw driver through the side of your oil filter right through to the other side and then just turn the filter with the screw driver. If you are not confident about this you can always buy a chain wrench which may come in handy for future oil changes. Get yourself a torque wrench look at what poundage the wrench should be set at in your manual and away you go. It is a messy job so sheet the floor with bin liners and get something to drain the oil in. good luck mate and keep us informed.

some vw oil filters have a nut on end of them 27mm or 30mm,never used a torque spanner for tightning sump ,a lot of vws dont have sump gaskets but use high temp silicone to seal use a good helping,sump nut may only be hand tight in new sump.
for removal of driveshaft i use a few long extensions and splined socket with drivers wheel off and number 3 philips in through wheel stud in flange locks it to release or tighten,word of warning give extension a tap with hammer to make sure spline is inserted all the way.
