Tm5402, tm6902, tm7102

the TM can supply enough power to small pocket usb only drives without mains connections

Digidude, any particular USB powered HDD you can confirm working?

I'd rather not pay for one to find out it doesn't (I'm looking for anything upward of 1TB)

Another quick question. I currently have sky+ with the two cables from the dual LNB. Do I connect both to the 5402 or just the one?

Hi

I own a 7102 so not sure how much I can tell you about the 5402 but can offer the following:

1. Recordings are made as .trp files which are an adapted form of MPEG2. The 7102 records in 2GB chunks so for a long recording you get a .trp, an .001 and a .002 etc. You have to join these using a DOS command or something like HxD editor. I then open them in MPEG Streamclip and convert to .ts or .mpeg format. Can then be played or burned as regular files.

2. The HDD does take JPGs and MP3s but not sure how these inter-react with recordings. There is a File Manager menu which lets you view/play/manage these. Don't see why they should affect recording but haven't tried.

3. You can't use a USB-powered HDD as far as I know. An external USB HDD works fine. The 7102 takes an internal HDD - which needs to be one drawing very low power. Technomate can advise which models but I had problems with the Samsung supplied with the machine - instant overheating and cut-out. That disc works fine in an external powered housing and the Western Digital that replaced it is also fine internally.

4. Don't know - I've only ever set single programmes from the EPG. There's a daily/weekly setting but don't think it's intelligent (like my Panasonic Freesat recorder).

5. No knowledge of 8281 activities.

6. Once you have channels set and favourites etc programmed, you may not want to go through it all again when you do a factory reset after uploading the latest patches. You save and re-load your channel list then. This also lets you edit it within a channel editor on your PC rather than tediously through the remote. I've loaded patches via USB stick but if I recall correctly had to download and upload the channels over a serial cable.

Good luck...!

Thanks Goldnet,

You say that it records in 2GB chunks, what's a typical duration of said chunk? 1 hour 2 hours???

Apparently there are some "issues" with HDD & timeshift & phantompatch (read my post in question to technomate)

Have a 5402 & iomega320gb and timeshift just simply doesnt work (freezes/unwatchable!), playing recorded files is just "OK" but not perfect. Timeshift works perfectly on a 16gb usb sitck !?

I emailed technomate and had this answer:

"I have just tried the timeshift option on my receiver and the fault you listed is not present on my receiver, can you please let me know which software version you have installed on the receiver as it may be a conflict on the software."

also later:

"The drive that I have used to test the time shift was a Samsung S2 500gb hard drive. previously I have used a WD passport 320gb and 500gb and a Seagate Freeagent go 320gb.

If you have any problems please call us on 020 8884 0701."

For the guy there is no problems AT ALL on his 5402 & official software using these HDD ...

And theres the difference m8

the joys of unofficial 3rd party software :)

Why on earth would TM support Phantompatches anyway ?
We should be happy we have phantom and the extra's ! :)

Anyway There was always a bit of a difference between the original firmware and the patched firmware. Admit it, we can do some extra stuff the box normally would not do and in combination with recording i can imagine it is not easy to make it all work 100%

THIS IS what I quoted in "question to technomate":

"Maybe some "extra" work for phantom...dont know, a fix would be much appreciated. Only wishing...not requesting, many thanks."

THANK you for your hard work and support
Regards.

For your question about the two cables the 5402 only has one tuner so you only connect one lnb cable i you want a box like sky+ you could get the 7102
this box has two sat.tuners and one dtt tuner.
I have used a usb powered hdd from" freecom "360gb for my tm's for many years. the spec. you need for your 5402hd should be in the manual you get with the box (like what speed and ect.) you might have to format it to fat32format how to do this is in here

This wil be depending on what you record HD or SD and the quality of the broadcast.
some HD movies could take about 4.5Gb

Did you ever try to format your drives to fat32format i'm not saying this will fix it but i had simalar problems with my old 6900 non super and when i changed format it worked perfect how to do this is in here

Thanks thijss26 but I'm a little confused, I thought the 5402 could record 3 channels and you could watch a 4th at least that's how it's advertised on some websites. Can you do all this down one cable? Or can't the 5402 do this??

you can record 3 channels 'on the same transponder'

channels come in groups, on a transponder (frequency)

Thank you, yes I did try this but didnt help.

Thanks for all your assistance so far guys.

Would anyone be able to help me with some 8281 issues?

If so please PM me!

What kind of issues do you mean you can talk more freely on this forum
just don't post any c-line or server info
have a good read of this thread about the 8281 server menu
https://www.digitalworldz.co.uk/index.php?threads/189322/ read it all to get some basic idea what it is.
my personal advice to you would be stick with the official firmware at the moment to get used to the 5402 and the problems on the phantom patches are sorted.when you fully know your tm start with the 24hr testlines ask in a pm where to get them.or google premium cccamservers
i think you still have a sky dish so only astra 28.2 east .Maybe upgrade to a motorised dish in the future so you could enjoy the softcams with the patches.

OK thijss26,

I am able to get it connected in the 8281 menu but the subscription channels are still scrambled. Am I missing a step. I do have the 1.06 phantom patch installed but only because I thought this patch would unlock the 8281 menu, do you advise I revert back to the official firmware?

I have read the thread that you linked, several times infact which is how I managed to get it connected.

I've thought about a motorised dish, I'd need to research the additional channels that'd be available to decide if worth doing.

All i'm saying is get used to your box first and maybe stick to official firmware untill the theethingproblems for the hdd and few other basic things are sorted
so your experience with tm's will be a good one.

I ended up buying a verbatim USB powered 1TB external hard drive and it seems to work very well for the PVR/timeshift.

I've also uploaded all my photos, videos and mp3's to the HDD. The photo viewer seems to crash so that I have to switch off the stb to reset and not all mp3's will play. Also some divx files will play sound but no video. Not too impressed with these "added extras" but then again I didn't buy it for these.

Also having a few problems with the EPG. I've done the trick of leaving it on the IEPG radio station all night and it works for some channels but not others especially the movie channels and if you turn off the stb it all disappears. (have latest patch 1.07)

One last thing, I have one of the cables from my sky mini-dish connected to the TM and the other to my Sky+ box. The Sky box keeps telling me no signal is being received and I have to swap the cable to the spare input on the back of the box for it to work. Can I use the loop through output on the back of the TM and connect it to the spare input on the back of the sky box to resolve this problem?

On your question about the loop through you could do this but it wil only get signal for the same transponders as the tm would be on if the sky box accepts this i don't know.
The epg should work fine when your on the radio station you will have to go into epgmode to populate the epg for the movie channels and ect. this will only take about five minutes.
and for some files not playing i have the same on my 6902 the divix player on tm's is only new so i hope they will tweak it a bit more in the next patches
so it will work with no problems.

It looks like the sky+ box is not clever enough to know that a cable is unplugged, therefore switch to the second input. I know this because when it says no signal is being received I can just unscrew the connection and swap it to the other input for it to work.

I’m hoping that by using the loop through from the TM that the sky box will recognise that one is in use and switch to the other automatically. Fingers crossed!!

I wish I had read more into this before buying the box. It was advertised as being able to record 3 channels and watch a 4th. Little did I know that this was only if they’re all on the same transponder. D’oh

I now wish I’d gone for a twin or triple tuner, but man those triples are expensive.

Just thought I'd come back to this as it will clear things up...EVEN if I will look "stupid" for some...

I did format the usb powered disk to fat32 USING technomate method >>> VIA PC, and end up having freezing described above when using timeshift.

I HAVE NOW TRY to format HDD using the onboard menu (FORMAT DISK)of my 5402 and MIRACLE , timeshift AND recorded files will play PERFECTLY !?!?!

Just to let people know: USE onboard menu to format disk to fat32, IT WORKS ! dont forget to save your recorded files first!

To phantom: sincere apologizes, at least you dont need to look at this issue...there no issue with HDD ! maybe only those mentioned by neomagik...
