Phone Unlocking unlocking a virgin galaxy s

hi guys i want to give my nipper my phone but its locked to virgin and i want him on giff gaff
I reckon it carnt be done as it seems its the only version of the galaxy that will not software update via keis
If anyone can help great i suppose if someone has a idiot proof step by step guide on how to put a custom firmware on it id have a crack at it

I unlocked mine with sgsunlock from the android market.

I think the phone needs to be rooted first though!

can you please elaborate on rooted? im thick as they come mate

kind of like having administrator rights on a windows pc

root = administrator

full access to the root file system.. being able to change things were you normaly couldn't
