Elvis has shaken up the musical history books by clinching the 1,000th UK number one - over a quarter of a century after his death.

The King's fans were left rocking as his 1959 re-released track One Night left bookmakers feeling blue following a flood of bets on it taking the landmark prize.

And the single was not lonesome tonight as last week's chart-topper Jailhouse Rock filled the number 10 slot.

Eighteen of the King's tracks are being re-released by Sony BMG in succession in commemoration of his life.

His success breaks another record as it takes the singer's own tally of number one hits to 20, the most number one hits for an artist.

It leaves The Beatles trailing with 17.

The main rivals to Elvis, who died at the age of 42 in 1977, were Manic Street Preachers who scooped the number two slot with their new single Empty Souls.
