Summer Transfers 2007

Alves admirers on alert

Real Madrid, Barcelona, Liverpool and Milan have been put on alert after Daniel Alves's agent confirmed that the player could be set to leave Sevilla this summer.

The four European giants are all fans of the Brazilian star and will be monitoring the situation after Jose Rodriguez Baster 'Rodri' stated that now is the perfect time for him to step up a level.

Alves has attracted interest from across Europe with his dynamic displays for Sevilla and Rodri believes that the club should cash in now.

"This type of player always ends up moving because that is the way the market dictates it," the agent told Punto Radio.

"One has to be realistic and recognise that the best players always end up playing for the biggest clubs.

"I am not saying that Sevilla are not a big club, but they are a level behind some on both a sporting and an economic front.

"It is the right time to sell Daniel and besides, (club president, Jose Maria) Del Nido has already said that nobody is indispensable at the club.

"Daniel is happy and the president did everything when it came to renewing his contract the last time."

The 24-year-old, who is renowened for his attacking flourishes, joined Sevilla in 2002 from Bahia and won his first cap for Brazil last year.

Owen to Spurs

Tottenham are weighing up a shock move for Newcastle United striker Michael Owen.

The Daily Express says Spurs are ready to meet the £9 million buyout clause that Owen's Toon deal carries.

Tottenham boss Martin Jol will watch Owen in action against Brazil this weekend and is now leaning towards bringing the England international to White Hart Lane in the summer.

Torino to offer £6M for Man Utd's Saha

Torino president Urbano Cairo is planning a bid for Manchester United striker Louis Saha.

Leggo says Cairo is convinced he can land Saha for a knockdown £6 million this summer given the spate of injury problems the Frenchman has endured since moving to Old Trafford.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson insists he's happy to hang onto Saha next season, but may use Torino's interest to flush out rival suitors to drive up the striker's price-tag. Along with the Italians, Olympique Lyon and Tottenham have also been linked with Saha in recent weeks.

Fiorentina ready to meet Liverpool price for Sissoko

Fiorentina have approached Liverpool to begin talks over a deal for Momo Sissoko.

Juventus have been speaking with Liverpool since January, but risk being trumped Fiorentina, where president Diego Dalla Valle is prepared to offer £8 million to take Sissoko to Florence.

Fiorentina sports chief Pantaleo Corvino wants to make Sissoko the club's big signing for the summer market after losing Luca Toni to Bayern Munich.

Liverpool to bid as agent opens door to Daniel Alves sale

Liverpool are set to bid for Sevilla wing-back Daniel Alves after his agent admitted the Brazilian is on the market.

"This type of player ends up leaving because the market dictates it," said Daniel Alves' agent, 'Rodri'. "Everyone knows that these type of players always end up at a great club.

"I'm not saying Sevilla aren't great, but they're a step below the very best because of their financial potential.

"It is now the moment to sell Daniel and in addition the president has said 'nobody is essential at the club'."

Liverpool are favourites to land Daniel Alves, but will face competition from Chelsea for the young Brazilian.

Chelsea sign Latics starlet

Chelsea have beaten off competition from a host of clubs to land Oldham Athletic striker Danny Philliskirk.

The 16-year-old, son of Latics youth team coach Tony, has put pen-to-paper on a four-year deal at Stamford Bridge.

Philliskirk will complete a two-year scholarship with The Blues before moving onto a professional contract for the final two seasons.

The young front man is thought to have attracted the attention of many Premiership clubs, including Bolton where his father had a stint as a player.

However, Philliskirk has opted to join Chelsea and will link up with the West London club on a contract until 2011.

"We're delighted for Danny - he is joining a massive club with fantastic resources which will help him develop his game," Oldham chief executive Alan Hardy told the club's official website.

"Talking with Tony, I know he has been impressed with the facilities. Danny has four years of security and time is now on his side to develop into an excellent player.

"Also, we may have an opportunity of taking him on loan at some stage."

Terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but Oldham are expected to benefit from numerous add-ons which could lead to a lucrative deal.

As part of the deal, Chelsea have agreed send some of the club's top youngsters out on loan to Boundary Park.

Meanwhile, Gareth Owen could also be heading out of Oldham after a nominal fee was agreed with Stockport for the defender.

The 24-year-old, who has expressed a desire to move to Edgeley Park having spent last season on loan at the League Two club, has been given permission to discuss personal terms with Stockport.

Liverpool enter full-back chase
31/5/2007 Liverpool are believed to have joined Newcastle in the race to sign Wigan defender Leighton Baines, as Rafa Benitez seeks a left back. With John Arne Riise providing the only left-footed option at left-back, with Fabio Aurelio showing he is more comfortable in midfield, Benitez is keen to add another full-back during the close season. Baines is a top target for Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce, but it appears Liverpool could beat the Magpies to the signing of the England Under 21 international because of problems behind the scenes. A conflict between Sports Soccer tycoon Mike Ashley, who is set to takeover at St James', and Wigan chairman and JJB Sports founder Dave Whelan looks set to have an impact on where Baines ends up. Meanwhile, the Reds have snapped up another young European player with Swedish teenager Alexander Kacaniklic moving to Anfield.

Left-wing duo in Reds' sights
31/5/2007 Liverpool are reportedly closing in on Lyon winger Florent Malouda and will target Valencia's David Silva if they fail with that bid.Reds boss Rafa Benitez is on the look out for a left-sided midfielder with Dutch ace Bolo Zenden set to depart Anfield on a free transfer when his contract expires in a month's time. And the Guardian claims the Spanish tactician will swoop for £8million-rated Malouda when he returns from his family holiday this coming weekend. The 26-year-old France international, who helped his country to last summer's World Cup final in Germany and Lyon to a sixth straight French Ligue 1 title, has reportedly been told he can leave Stade Gerland following the departure of coach and former Reds boss Gerard Houllier. And Liverpool are readying a swoop which could be completed by next week. However should Malouda opt against joining the Reds then it is claimed that Valencia's £12million-rated midfielder, Silva, is next on his list. A report in the Sun suggests Benitez has already contacted his former club about Silva's potential availability, while the player has hinted he could be ready to move on if the chance arose.

The `Qualified For The Club Championship With A Pretty Pathetic 77` Gossip

01 June

ANELKA EMERGES AS MANYOO CONTENDER...BUT GILL SAYS MAJOR BUSINESS HAS BEEN DONE (THAT'S DAVID GILL, NOT F365's PETE)
Nicolas Anelka has emerged as a surprise target for ManYoo.

Fresh from signing Owen Hargreaves, Nani and Anderson, the acquisition of a striker is now Sir Alex Ferguson's top priority.

'United have made inquiries as to Anelka's availability at Bolton and it is understood that the 28-year-old striker will be allowed to leave if a club competing in next season's Champions League lodge a bid matching the £8 million that Bolton paid Fenerbahce for the Frenchman last August,' reports The Daily Telegraph.

The Guardian concurs, announcing that Ferguson's 'initial targets had included Barcelona's Samuel Eto'o and Dimitar Berbatov of Tottenham Hotspur, though they have effectively been priced out of his budget following this week's spending.

'Another highly-rated striker, the Ajax forward Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, who scored 23 goals in 34 league appearances in Holland last term, has indicated he would prefer to remain in the Eredivisie for a further season.'

But whilst The Times also talks of Anelka being on ManYoo's list of targets, it also declares 'but it is a long list headed by Eto'o and taking in names such as Dimitar Berbatov (Tottenham Hotspur), Fernando Torres (Atlético Madrid), Klaas Jan Huntelaar (Ajax), Carlos Tévez (West Ham United) and Michael Owen (Newcastle United).'

Intriguingly, following their triple raid this week, chief executive David Gill has indicated that the bulk of the club's 'major' transfer work has now been completed.

"We will see what happens over the next two or three months but by and large that will be the major element of our business," Gill told MUTV.

"If a player comes up that Sir Alex is convinced will make us better, I am sure we will find the funds but that is a major bit of business we have done this week."

SMITH FOR TOTTENHAM
Despite the apparent shortage of strikers at ManYoo, The Sun reckons that Alan Smith could be heading south for Tottenham. After all, he's English and not quite top-class so where else would he go?

It also sounds a little tenuous, however, with the rag probably over-reacting to reports that Smith hasn't been offered a new contract. 'The failure to sort out Smith might be a message United will sell the £7m-rated striker,' it says with the type of half-hearted sentence that should immediately prompt most sensible folk into turning to the next page.

CHELSKI BUY ANOTHER PLAYER ON A FREE
So what of Chelski? How are they going to respond to ManYoo spending around £55m before June? Erm, by signing a veteran striker on yet another free transfer.

The club have agreed personal terms on a four-year contract worth £50,000 a week with Claudio Pizarro, the Peru striker, who will join them on July 1,' discloses The Times. 'Pizarro will become the third player to arrive at Stamford Bridge this summer on a free transfer, with Steve Sidwell joining from Reading and Alex, the Brazil defender, returning from a three-year loan at PSV Eindhoven.'

Although Benni McCarthy continues to figure prominently in Jose Mourinho's thoughts, it remains to be seen just how much loose change Roman Abramovich is willing to hand over to the Portuguese.

Especially since The Sun carries quotes from Luis Felipe Scolari's agent indicating the Chelski job is Big Phil's if he wants it.

'Sources close to Scolari insist the approach took place in the last three weeks. That would mean Mourinho could yet lose his job this summer.'

REO-COKER AND BARTON FOR VILLA...OR TOON
There's significant disagreement about where Nigel Reo-Coker is heading.

On the one hand, The Guardian reckons that 'Aston Villa have emerged as favourites to sign Reo-Coker and are expected to agree a deal worth about £8m with West Ham United for the England Under-21 captain next week.'

On the other, The Sun's backpage proclaims: 'Nigel Reo-Coker has begged Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce to end his West Ham nightmare.

'Reo-Coker is desperate to quit Upton Park and would love the chance to link up with Allardyce at St James' Park.'

With Scott Parker expected to join West Ham imminently, Reo-Coker would represent a straight swap if he moved to St James'. However, The Guardian maintains that he is 'excited' about the prospect of working with Martin O'Neill and 'With Arsenal's interest cooling, Villa's bright ambitions under O'Neill have proved attractive to Reo-Coker.'

A similar story applies to another midfielder who's enjoyed troubled times of late.

Last night, the Birmingham Post reported that 'Joey Barton is weighing up a summer move to either Aston Villa or Newcastle United as he prepares to sever all ties with an unhappy spell at Eastlands.

'The 24-year-old midfielder has told his family that Martin O'Neill and Sam Allardyce are the only managers who he feels would understand him and allow him to concentrate on his football, a close family friend claimed yesterday.'

You can imagine the Bartons' family friends to be a lovely bunch, can't you?

Anyway, the Daily Mail and Daily Star disagree - they think Barton is heading for West Ham.

THIS LAD REALLY WANTS TO MOVE TO LIVERPOOL
Lyon winger Florent Malouda has made it pretty darn clear that he quite fancies the idea of moving to Liverpool.

"There has been contact with Liverpool, but nothing more than that yet. It's a beautiful club, with a great support and the chance to play in England in front of packed stadiums interests me.

"I want to go somewhere that I can take my game to the next level. I've read about what the club are expecting to get for me," he said with quotes that actually fully deserve the billing of a 'come-and-get-me plea'.

Malouda's only apparent concern is that the French champions could price him out of a move to Anfield.

"It's not money in my pocket, but £17m is a lot. The club have a right to ask for what they think I'm worth but my only hope is it doesn't stop me from going."

TOON WANT VIDUKA TO LOOK AFTER OWEN
Big Fat Sam wants to get a Big Fat Striker to play up front with Little Mickey Owen. Not just any big fat striker (stop squeezing into those shorts, Mickey Quinn, it's over) - he has eyes on Middlesbrough's Mark Viduka, who still hasn't made up his mind where he wants to go.

The Daily Mirror say Fat Sam reckons the move will persuade Owen to stay put.

Aware Viduka is going, Boro 'are set to bid £5m' for West Brom's Diomansy Kamara, who is looking for a move to the Premiership after the Baggies' defeat in the play-off final.

Boro move for Gunner

Skysports.com understand that Middlesbrough are set to agree a deal with Arsenal for Jeremie Aliadiere.

Boro were close to signing the French striker in January, but their interest cooled in recent weeks and they looked like going elsewhere.

However, with rivals interest from the Premiership and La Liga - Boro boss Gareth Southgate has again launched a bid.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is willing to do business as Aliadiere - who featured a number of times towards the end of last season - wants regular first-team football.

The 24-year-old has been with Arsenal for eight years and obviously feels the time is now right to move on and Teesside looks set to be his new home.

Boro are in need of new strikers with both Mark Viduka and Yakubu Aiyegbeni looking unlikely to start next season with the club.

Viduka is understood to have told Newcastle that he will be moving to Tyneside, shunning a host of other offers - including one to remain with Boro.

Yakubu is known to be frustrated with life at The Riverside and although Boro are keen for him to stay, a big offer this summer will likely see the Nigerian depart.

Newcastle move for Czech

Newcastle United have joined the race to sign Czech international defender David Rozehnal.

The Paris Saint Germain star is the subject of a bid from Borussia Dortmund, but now Newcastle have entered the battle for his signature.

The 26-year-old has been a rock at the heart of the PSG defence for the last two years since joining from Club Brugge.

Dortmund looked clear favourites to land Rozehnal, but now his representatives have confirmed Newcastle are now very much in the running as new boss Sam Allardyce targets some much needed defensive reinforcements.

Pavel Zika admits that talks between PSG and Borussia are not going as smoothly as they could.

"After a meeting between PSG and Borussia representatives it seemed the deal would be done easily, but now it looks that the negotiations will be very tough," he said.

"Also, Newcastle are yet to have their strong say."

Vikor Kolar - who works with Zika, admitted that Rozehnal's future will be decided by PSG.

"It will depend which side hand PSG the most financially interesting offer," he told Sport.

"Both destinations [Borussia and Newcastle] have their magic, but PSG will have the final word. David is going to consider his future after Saturday's match against Wales."

Allardyce is a known fan of Rozehnal after trying to sign him for Bolton as recently as January and he has wasted little time in rekindling his interest.

Agent: Big five want Gamst

The race is on to sign Morten Gamst Pedersen and the top-five clubs in England want him, according to his agent.

The Blackburn Rovers winger has been linked with a number of clubs in recent months following a great run of form.

The 25-year-old is reported to have a release clause in his contract, which looks to make Pedersen a very tempting target.

Now his agent Rune Hauge has stated that Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham all have an interest in his charge and admits contacts have been made.

"All the big five follow Morten's situation." confirmed agent Rune Hauge to Dagbladet.

"We are in contact with the clubs. Morten plays in a special position on the left and can play as well both in 4-3-3 and 4-4-2."

"The big ones might not have space for players of his type and we might see players in that position leave some of the clubs the coming weeks."

Hauge's quotes are unlikely to sit too well at Ewood Park, with manager Mark Hughes stating earlier this summer that he had no intention of letting Pedersen leave.

Hammers agree Parker price

West Ham United have agreed an undisclosed fee with Newcastle United for Scott Parker.

The midfielder has been allowed to move on by new Magpies boss Sam Allardyce who is believed to be targeting Joey Barton as Parker's replacement.

Parker will once again link up with Alan Curbishley at West Ham, with the pair having previously worked together at Charlton.

The 26-year-old left The Addicks in January 2004 in a £10million move to Chelsea, but he failed to make a real impression at Stamford Bridge.

Parker joined Newcastle last summer but his time in the North East lasted just one season as he is now heading back to London.

The Hammers are believed to be paying in the region of £8.5million for Parker's services and have fended off late interest from Tottenham.

Parker will likely be Nigel Reo-Coker's replacement at Upton Park after the West Ham captain handed in a transfer request last week.

Blues clinch Parnaby deal

Birmingham City have beaten a number of clubs to the signing of Middlesbrough defender Stuart Parnaby.

The 24-year-old was a graduate of Boro's famed academy, but he has opted to leave the club on a Bosman transfer after making over 100 first team appearances for the North East club.

Parnaby has penned a three-year deal at St Andrews with an option for a fourth.

The former England Under-21 star is believed to have had offers from Aston Villa, Everton, West Ham, Sunderland, Sheffield United and Hull - but he has decided his future is best served at St Andrews

Sir Alex Ferguson has strengthened his ranks considerably since the end of the season by signing Nani, Anderson and Owen Hargreaves, so he may be willing to let Scholes go.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez is prepared to use all of his £35m transfer kitty to land Barcelona's Samuel Eto'o, according to today's Independent.

The summer scramble for the Barcelona forward's signature is likely to include Manchester United as well but Benitez wants to strike early to get his target.

Chelsea have left Frank Lampard out of their new kit launch, fuelling speculation that he will leave Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea’s website yesterday stated: “The new kit shots will feature Chelsea stars John Terry, Michael Ballack, Petr Cech, Didier Drogba, Joe Cole, Ashley Cole and Arjen Robben.”

What do you think about these latest reports? Should Scholes consider joining up with Roy Keane in the north-east? Would Fergie be mad to let him go? Post your thoughts now?

i would seriously doubt Fergie would let Scholesy leave he is still a great player and is still the best in his position he is technically very gifted but i can understand why Keano wants him but i for one can't see him leaving as Fergie knows he is a class act and can't be replaced by any of the 3 Carrick, Hargreaves or Anderson.

I think Keano may well bid but United won't allow it considering the season he just had where he was fantastic for us.

'HUNGARIAN RONALDO' HAS TRIALS

Several top European sides are in the hunt for Hungarian starlet Roland Varga, according to his agent.

The 17-year-old MTK Budapest striker, who has been likened to Cristiano Ronaldo, has been linked in with moves to several sides, Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson (pictured) rumoured to be considering an approach.

But while his agent, Nandor Bognar, admits the player would be interested in such a move, he has denied the English champions have made contact.

"We'd be happy if Manchester United wanted to sign him, but they haven't shown interest in Roland so far," he told obudaisport.hu.

However, Bognar said he has had trials with a string of top clubs, and wants to prove himself outside of youth teams.

"He's just come home from Tottenham Hotspur and before this he had a trial with Scottish side Hearts, English team Reading and Spanish side Espanyol.

"He had to prove his abilities among older players because - I hope I don't seem to be too stuck-up - he 'outgrew' the football of his age group."

He added: "So far, we haven't received any detailed offers."

Ranieri can clinch Lampard for Juventus

Claudio Ranieri can clinch Frank Lampard's signature for Juventus, it has been claimed.

Ranieri is a target for Juve's board following the departure of Didier Deschamps last week and his links with Lampard is fueling talk of a deal this summer for the Chelsea man.

It was Ranieri who signed former West Ham midfielder Lampard for Chelsea and the prospect of working with the England man in Turin excites the Italian, says Tuttosport.

Juve are among a host of big European clubs chasing Lampard, who has seen new contract talks stall at Chelsea in recent weeks.

A rival for Ranieri at Juve is Sven Goran Eriksson, says the Sunday Times, and the former England boss is another big fan of Lampard's.

Barcelona wait for sign from Arsenal's Henry

Barcelona sports director Txiki Begiristain admits they're ready to open talks with Arsenal for their captain Thierry Henry.

"If he has the desire to play here, then we can see if it's going to happen or not," Begiristain said.

"Barcelona remains the same. It is the perfect place for players who want to come here. I always say the same thing - it's down to the players to decide."

Arsenal ask Newcastle for Martins, Owen

Arsenal have approached Newcastle United about the availability of striker Obafemi Martins.

El Mundo Deportivo says Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has asked Newcastle about Martins and fit-again Michael Owen as he prepares to sell captain Thierry Henry this summer.

Martins is rated at £10 million, while Owen can leave St James' Park courtesy of a £9 million buyout clause.

Barcelona in advanced talks for Liverpool's Xabi

Barcelona are closing in on Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso.

DiarioSport says negotiations between Barca and Liverpool are at an advanced stage for Xabi, whose Dad is a former Nou Camp star.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is resigned to losing Xabi, who has baulked at agreeing terms over a new contract extension at Anfield.

Everton, Villa go for Wolves winger Kightly

Everton and Aston Villa are chasing Wolves winger Michael Kightly.

Kightly, 21, made a massive impact after arriving at Molineux from Conference side Grays in January's transfer window - and helped Wolves reach the play-offs, where they were beaten by arch rivals West Brom in the semi-finals.

The skilful wideman has admitted he would like to sign a new deal with Mick McCarthy's troops - but a firm offer of £3million on the table may be tempting as it would prove a nice profit on the £25,000 it cost to sign him.

Both David Moyes and Martin O'Neill are looking to add more midfield creativity to their squads this summer - and have plenty of cash at their disposal thanks to the Premiership's bumper new Sky TV deal.

Kightly said: "There has been some speculation about me and other clubs, but I have always said if I was offered a new, longer contract at Wolves I would be more than happy to sign it."

Arsenal's Reyes orders agents to find Spanish club

Jose Antonio Reyes won't consider a return to Arsenal when his loan with Real Madrid expires at the end of the Spanish Liga season.

Marca says Reyes has informed his agents to find him another Spanish Liga club as he refuses to consider the prospect of returning to London this summer.

Atletico Madrid and former club Sevilla are in the frame for the Spain international striker.

Barcelona's Saviola welcomes Man Utd contact

Manchester United have joined the race for Barcelona's Bosman prospect Javier Saviola.

The News of the World says Saviola is set to quit Barcelona this month on a Bosman free, paving the way for a possible move to Old Trafford for less than £7 million. Any deal on offer would be for around three years and worth about £50,000 a week.

Arsenal, Liverpool, Bolton, Valencia and Real Madrid are also interested but United are Saviola's preferred choice.

Saviola, who has had three years at the Nou Camp, is not impressed by a new deal offer from the Spanish giants at much reduced money.

He said: "I consider my career at Barcelona is finished. There are several offers on the table."

West Ham go for Chelsea winger SWP

West Ham United are planning an ambitious bid for Chelsea winger Shaun Wright-Phillips.

The Mirror says Wright-Phillips, 25, will cost in the region of £10million with Chelsea unlikely to recoup the £21m they paid Manchester City two years ago.

The Hammers almost signed Wright-Phillips in January but the winger wanted to fight to stay in Jose Mourinho's plans.

But now the East Enders are confident of landing their man, despite interest from Aston Villa and Spurs, and have eased their wage bill to accommodate his wages by ruthlessly wielding the axe.

Keeper Roy Carroll, skipper Nigel Reo-Coker and a whole host of fringe players have already been told they can leave.

Charlton seek £15M-plus for Bent

Charlton Athletic won't accept anything less than £15 million for star striker Darren Bent this summer.

The striker's future is unclear as he has yet to hold discussions with the club and will do so when he returns from holiday.

"He's in the Caribbean at the moment and doesn't want to discuss anything until he gets back," an executive at the club told the Observer. "There's actually been no offers for him. But if we don't get the asking price he isn't going. We turned down £15million in January. And that was from a club outside the big four - Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool. We had to turn that down then because we still had a chance of avoiding relegation."

He added: "So far, we haven't received any detailed offers."

if he is that good why didnt spurs grab him lol

RAFA TO SPEND HIS BUDGET ON ETO'O?
Rafa Benitez is considering spending his entire summer budget on one player: Barcelona's Samuel Eto'o.

According to The Independent, the Liverpool boss is 'willing to gamble' around £35m on the striker - approximately the total amount which will be made available to him by the club's new American owners. Any surplus funds would then be used to acquire Lyon left-winger Florent Malouda.

Intriguingly, the Indy claims that Rafa's criticism of the club following defeat in the Champions League final, in which he launched a thinly-veiled attack on chief executive Rick Parry, upset the Americans and they had to be 'persuaded by Parry that they should stick by their manager despite his words.'

In return, 'in the next week he is expected to test their pledges to back him with money by asking them to put together a bid for Eto'o.'

BARCA BACK IN FOR HENRY
If Eto'o does depart Barcelona, the Spanish giants will need a new striker. Could that be Thierry Henry.

Reports in Spain insist that Barca have once again revived their longstanding interest in the Frenhcman and 'are hoping their advances will get agreement from Henry to move to Spain.'

ROMAN TURNS OFF THE CHELSKI TAP
With Jose Mourinho's announcement that he is happy to work on a limited budget a clear indication that Roman Abramovich has closed his chequebook, Real Madrid have emerged as favourites to sign the Blues' long-time target David Villa.

The Times says that Madrid have 'requested that the Valencia forward is not sold until the end of the Spanish season... while they consider what their next coach may want.'

Jose, meanwhile, has all-but confirmed that Chelski will not be spending heavily this summer following the arrivals of Steve Sidwell, Claudio Pizarro and Alex on free transfers.

"The change in philosophy is not because Mr Abramovich turned off the tap," he insisted. "The philosophy is we spent money before, built the squad for a long time and don't need to make big investments season after season.

"Last season to this season, we will have basically the same squad. If you forget 'old [Claude] Makelele', the squad is still young, still has a lot to give. The squad can be together for a few more years so we don't have big needs. If you don't have big needs, why spend big money?"

Yeah, whatever.

SUNDERLAND BID FOR...OH, THIS IS JUST SILLY
With an early contender for 'Silliest Rumour Of The Summer', The Sun claim that Sunderland manager Roy Keane has bid £2m for ManYoo's Paul Scholes.

'Keane will try to tempt his former team-mate into a final challenge before he retires,' it reports. 'Keane may also move for another old team-mate with Newcastle midfielder Nicky Butt, 32, on his wish-list.'

Try to stop laughing soon.

ALIADIERE DOESN'T KNOW OF BORO INTEREST YET
Although Middlesbrough have agreed a fee with Arsenal for Jeremie Aliadiere, it remains to be seen whether the Frenchman fancies living in the north-east.

The Guardian says that 'Aliadière is on holiday and has not yet discussed the proposed move.'

Boro failed with a bid for Aliadière in January because of the Gunners' lengthy injury list.

BARTON TO JOIN TOON WITH MORE TO FOLLOW
Newcastle are expected to announce the signing of Man Citeh midfielder Joey Barton later today.

Meanwhile, according to The Guardian, 'Sam Allardyce is also hopeful of fending off competition from Birmingham City and acquiring Mark Viduka on a free transfer from Middlesbrough this week.

'Yet, as ever, defence remains Newcastle's priority and the new manager intends to sign Tal Ben Haim, available on a free after allowing his contract to run down at Bolton. However, Allardyce's relationship with the Israeli international deteriorated markedly when he blocked Ben Haim's mooted move to Chelsea last January. Bridges may need to be rebuilt before any reunion takes place.'

AND AJ TO FOLLOW PARKER TO WEST HAM?
Barton is set to take Scott Parker's place at Newcastle with the midfielder poised to complete his move to West Ham today - becoming Alan Curbishley's first summer signing.

As in January, Curbishley has been given plenty of cash to spend by Eggert Magnusson. According to the back page of The Daily Mail, the Hammers will offer £13m for Andrew Johnson and tempt him south with the promise of £90,000-a-week wages.

'The England striker is aware of the interest and although West Ham expect Everton to rebuff their opening bid, the London club are prepared to go as high as £18m, which could prove too good to turn down,' it reports.

VILLA IN FOR ANOTHER MIDFIELDER
Despite plenty of gossip to the contrary, Aston Villa have yet to make their mark in this summer's market, with both Parker and Barton reputedly snubbing interest from Villa Park to move elsewhere.

So it is now being claimed that Martin O'Neill has set his sights much closer to home. 'West Bromwich midfielder Jason Koumas has revealed that Aston Villa have joined the race to sign him,' declares the Mail. 'Koumas, 27, is also a £6million target for Everton, Blackburn Rovers, Sunderland and Celtic following Albion's failure to return to the Premiership.'

Not that the Mail is necessarily a reliable guide - it claimed on Friday that Barton was joining West Ham.

ANOTHER SECTION ON HENRY
Talk of Thierry Henry leaving Arsenal will not quieten down until either he leaves Arsenal or the transfer window slams shut. The latest rumour, provided by The Sun, is that 'AC Milan are lining up a shock bid' for their columnist.

The Mail continues to maintain that Barca are on the hunt again, and 'are ready to make an official approach to Arsenal. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is on holiday so no decisions on the future of Henry, 29, will be made imminently, but it is believed that he would consider a bid of around £20 million.'

Back to The Sun. They reckon that 'Arsenal are close to signing Auxerre right-back Bakari Sagna for £6million.'

It sounds unlikely - the Gunners recently handed Emmanuel Eboue a new long-term contract, with another for his understudy, local boy Justin Hoyte. Another right-back is far from a priority, especially when that rancid piece of s**t less-than-perfect midfielder Alex Hleb is still considered a first-team pick.

If you are interested, the 24-year-old Sagna was 'recently voted France's best player in his position by his fellow players, was in the national squad for the first time for Saturday's Euro 2008 qualifying win over Ukraine.'

ANELKA UNLIKELY TO JOIN HEINZE AT MANYOO
Nicolas Anelka claims he has no plans to leave Bolton, but admits he "could not say no" to an offer from Manchester United.

Gabriel Heinze, however, is on his way out of Old Trafford. The left-back has held discusssions with Real Madrid about becoming Roberto Carlos' successor, but is now also thought to be wanted by Barcelona.

"When the internationals are over we'll see where I will play. I don't know if I'll play for Madrid or Barcelona," the Argentine is quoted as saying in The Sun.

INTERESTING STUFF FROM JOSE
Just a few days after saying that he was happy to work on a limited budget at Chelski, Jose Mourinho has announced he wants to sign a defender, a midfielder, and a striker.

In one respect, the quotes are confusing as they don't clarify whether or not Alex has already arrived from PSV. Chelski have always been deliberately vague over their ownership of the Brazilian defender, yet it is widely believed that he will move to Stamford Bridge from Holland this summer after a three-year placement with the Dutch champions. However, any such deal would only begin on July 1st - explaining why Mourinho stated he is still looking to sign a central defender.

As reported by The Independent: 'Asked how many newcomers might be joining Sidwell, Mourinho, in Africa on a charity mission with Chelsea, said:"I think three, and it is obvious a central defender because we have problems during the season with injuries in defence. A central defender, a midfielder and a striker."'

Does he mean another striker in addition to Claudio Pizarro, signed from Bayern Munich on a free transfer last week? Probably. Both Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou are expected to miss a large chunk of the domestic season due to next year's African Cup of Nations and Jose would understandably be reluctant to rely on just Andriy Shevchenko and Pizarro for a month.

"I will try to keep them [the African players] until the last moment, just before the competition starts, but they have the Fifa rules on their side so if they want to go a couple of weeks before the competition starts just to train we have to let them come," he said.

BUT WILL HE SIGN THE MAN THAT PLEATY CALLS SHIMBOMBA?
He certainly will if you believe The Sun, who are convinced that Spurs will be offered more money than they know what to do with for Pascal Chimbonda.

Spurs, they say, 'are turning to Portugal defender Jose Bosingwa as they prepare for life without Pascal Chimbonda.

'Spurs boss Martin Jol has targeted the versatile Porto right-back with a view to a £3million deal.

'Chelsea want Chimbonda and refuse to give up despite having a £10m bid knocked back last week.'

And having told us that 'a £3million deal' is in the offing, the rag then informs us:

'He is a free agent.'

Top work.
