Not sure, but could be that on your 2nd IDE port in your CMOS setup has drives specified on them that don't exist. When starting up, try F2 (usual key press to get into the BIOS on Dells), and see if you have hard disk types specified where they shouldn't be. I'm no expert, but usually they're on "AUTO" to automatically configure the hard disk parameters or "NONE" to specify no hard disk, but it could be that you've got explicit hard disk definitions on the IDE ports, and the disks are no longer there.

... may be!

not 100% sure what you ment m8 ,but pressed F2 gone into setup and looked at the

primary drive 0 ...........hard drive
primary drive 1............unknown device
secondary drive 0.......cd-rom
seccondary drive 1......unknown device

all these are set on auto

boot up is

1 diskette drive
2 hard disk drive c
3 ide cd-rom device

if this is all corect then as stated maybe its the cmos battery.

(by the way how much are they nowadays..)

cheers for the help
