Are choosing the chips really just a matter of preference? Or is there one that people recommend over others?

the only chip that you can use at the moment with the latest wii's is the d2ckey and it will cost you about £40ish just for the chip.

you can use any chip for that one mate - I personally like wiikey but you could use wiinja or one of the openscource versions
