Router speed

Does anyone know which router will allow the full speed of the internet through?

I can connect directly to my modem and get a speedtest of about 17meg download but when connected through my router I only get about 6-7 meg.
I have tried two routers one Netgear and the other Dlink and I get similar results.

Has anyone managed to get thu full speed through a router?
