I've got an old siemens laptop and when I try to connect to the internet it comes up with a blank white page and then after a while it just disappears. I've done scans and it comes up clear, I just can't understand why it has started doing this, any help and advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm only able to do basic tasks on computers so would need simple instructions which I could perform. Thanks in advance.

Thanks, it does seem to be dragging on a bit. I've spent hours doing all sorts but nothing seems to work.
Lappy = Fujitsu Siemens C series lifebook
Modem = Scientific Atlanta Webstar EPC2100 Series
browser = IE7
I've tried the suggestions from Virgin but nothing happening. I might try again to create a new internet connection.

Thanks, been in touch with virgin again and they carried out some tests and said everything is working fine and that it's Windows problem with some files that are corrupted. I've got an original windows xp on lappy but I don't have a cd to reinstall it. Do you have any ideas how to get round this, as I don't want to use a copy version.
Don't worry about using a copy. You have an original XP installed on the lappy. All we need to know is what version it is so we can then try get you to a download of whatever version it is. It's either XP home or XP professional. Either one I suspect it's going to be a pre SP2 version. That is XP home or pro with SP1 on it.

Once we get this sorted all we do is get you to a download and you have the licence number on the bottom of the PC I hope. That is all it will take plus getting all the SP2 & SP3 stuff back on which is easy enough.

Thanks, sorry for the delay in reply, but I can't always get on the PC because the wife occupies it all day long and I only get a chance when she's gone to bed. Here is the info about my lappy, hope this is helpful.

I have the same problem with two desktop computers I can only get one to connect even when the one that connects to the internet is switched off - have you tried - Control panel - Nerwork & Internet - set up connection, there is also a troubleshooting option available

Not sure it could be IE7 causing the problem. However if you can download to another PC, which given your posts I assume you can, try downloading network magic form the link below. It's on a free trial basis and is very good at sorting out networking and connection issues.

Also download IE8 and put that on the system.
You will need to put both of these on a cd or transfer across to lappy using a network connection on your systems.
Let us know how you get on.

Not off at all oneman, having done some reseach it appears to be a known issue with earlier version releases of IE8 because it requires MS update KB946501 . It is usually a problem on Pre SP2 releases of Vista but has also come to light on Pre SP2 XP versions also.
In this case if you look at the info provided by pops1a from Belarc that MS update is missing. So that's one of the things that popsa1 needs to do.
Download KB946501 from the link below and then I suspect IE8 will load ok.
