joy stick problem advise psp

i'm fixin a psp not got any games for it , just the unit , its got a fault with its joy stick , can som1 tell me if i can test the stick with out playin a game ?

i can use the left hand side buttons to move through the settings using the the arrow keys if the joy stick was working could i use the stick ?. i'm tryin 2 find away of testin the joy stick with out getting a game .

is there a setting 2 deactivate the joy stick ? (just in case it a setting problem )
