iPhone JB iPhone 3GS can I update firmware?

@Kryton Thanks for the offer, I'm sure it won't come to that but I won't rule it out.

it's all going Peter Tong now! Just tried running snowbreeze and its starts patching the kernel and then I get an error message saying xpwntool.exe application error the application failed to initialise properly (0xc000009c)

Think I will just give up for tonight, ive got work in the morning.

lol

cant say this will work for sure but replace your host file with mine :http://www.sendspace.com/file/wgtk5s
make a copy of your own host file and keep it in a safe place should you need it.

Although you shouldn't have any lines that point at the apple servers in the host file : https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3086227?start=0&tstart=0

That's why you put the # in front or delete the command line if there is an apple line in the file.
So your host file should be ok.

But as you say you can't even make a back up of your phone now so i would be more inclined to think that the pc/laptop your using Is at fault,or your USB cable, could also be the reason why redsn0w sees your phone in recovery mode rather than DFU mode

Seen it a dozen times, people pulling there hair out, then try it on another pc and it works first time.

@Kryton I have tried backing up on another laptop and still get unexpected error message. I have backed the phone up in the past. If I restore using the unstitched IPSW file I downloaded via ifaith, would that sort my iPhone out again so I then sync with iTunes again and hopefully get it working before trying to upgrade to 5.1.1 when the phone is not throwing up errors?
