Afaik, if you want rid of the VM firmware on Netgear routers, do a search on sky wireless routers and firmware.
Basically you use the netgear tools freely available on their site to change the firmware. You can just put the most recent firmware for your model on.
I presume this will work on the cable based routers as it did on the ADSL based ones. I've successfully changed 2 sky ones that i received as a present from someone.
