I a looking to buy 1 good camera cctv system with opportunity to add 3 more .It needs to be accessed remotely and record.
Any recommendations of base unit and camera.
I Do have a server thats not doing too much just now. I could use but not essential.
Wifes rear car window was smashed yesterday and every time i go away from home now there seems to be small things happening .she. Had a puncture the trip before and rabbit was locked out of cage a couple of nights also the previous.
We can only think of one person but don't want to approach till proven.
Am hoping camera will deter but also don't want to buy crap that won't. Show. Me .
I want decent cameras so i can see if its an adult and so I can reckognised person and have a word.
Any help appreciated .
Cheers chronoman

Not my specialist subject but you can get them on aliexpress and eBay cheap enough.

Cameras seem to be measured in lines. A 720tvl camera should produce good results

I have done a lot of commercial CCTV work in the past, and still 'dabble'. I recently installed a system for a bar, they too wanted remote access. I have played about with port-forwarding etc. before for another project with limited success, so was delighted to find a DVR on the 'bay' (item no. 181169434477) which does away with that requirement. I also found a truly excellent camera , item no. 260960047496 It is very good in low light and is very configurable via internal menus. DVR is in UK, cam comes from China unfortunately, but worth the wait. @mark- the 'TVL' gives an indication of resolution, but not low-light ability. 720 is 'good' but may not necessarily work well in poor light- which of course is when most 'occurrences' happen. LUX figure determines this, the lower the better- i.e. .01 lux is better than .1 lux.

My only concern is from ebay etc is the megapixel can be high but. Quality still crap .i want quality camera's hence the reason to only purchase one initially.

Similar situation where the catalytic converter was stolen from my car last week, as you say it will not stop these scumbags but hopefully deter them.

I went for this wired system DVR 4 CHANNEL AUDIO DVR without the HDD (Added my own 2TB HDD) and added just the one camera 500 TVL 1/3 Sony Effio-e CCD 20M IR Night Vision Outdoor Bullet (Black Eagle king) 1/3 SONY CCD 500 TVL

Day vision is okay but night vision not all that but where my car is parked it is not a very we'll lit area, the image is very fuzzy. I've now just ordered a 600TVL Vari-focal IR Dome Camera DS-2CE5582P(N)-VFIR3 - Dome Cameras - Analog Cameras - CCTV Cameras 1/3” DIS 600TVL which hopefully should be here in the next day or 2 so will let you know what night vision is like on that.

The DVR itself is a nice little box, straight forward to setup (had mine up and running within half an hour) comes with a remote. Connection to my TV is via VGA cable. Continuous record in 15 minutes intervals (you can change this to what you like). There are 3 ports you need to forward from your router to the DVR ip's - HTTP Viewing, Media Viewing and Mobile Viewing. DVR comes with software to install on PC and android / ios apps. Playback is via the DVR itself or via software installed on PC.

Starts looking quite expensive with IP cameras. Are the networked DVRs POE for the cameras with these things?

I bought one similar to this from ebuyer ;-

HomeGuard DIY CCTV Kit 4-CH 2 Cam - Storage Options - Technology Without Compromise

Quite easy to set up .night vision, motion detection, mine has 500gb storage , , you can use your iphone or android phone to watch live while away using the free app Meye. You can a also set it up to email you with a video recording of any recording once the motion detector picks movement up and emails you the footage.

Just remember , you cant put these camera's behind glass for the night vision , they must have a clear line of sight.

mine cost £149.99 delivered but it was dicontinued.

this is the updated version

Storage Options Homeguard 4ch Dvr 500gb | Ebuyer.com

you will get cheaper for sure and better quality but it works good for me and 1/2 decent camera's

Yes, it is a 'bullet' camera. About the size of a thumb. Well mine, anyway! It is not waterproof, so it would need to be housed either indoors or in some kind of waterproof enclosure. I can vouch for the image quality of the cam, I've used a few of them now. Not the cheapest I know, but you get what you pay for....

the one I listed above has about 20m of cable per camera ( mine had 2 camera's) you can buy cable extension cable from eBay for pennies . The cable has a picture and a power cable strapped together as one so you have 2 plugs at either end , A power jack and a picture phono. You power the camera down this cable.

you then have to attach the other end to the dvr and connect an ethernet cable to the dvr recording box. Follow the instructions and your not long watching and recording the bad boys out there.

p.s. , someone mentions how its powered , you use a 5 into 1 cable that's sent with the set up. You basically split the power off the dvd and feed the camera's that way .

it looks like this ;-

1 to 5 Way Power Splitter : CCTV Power Supplies : Maplin Electronics

Do you need anything special at the DVR end to power the cameras?

Normally you would have a transformer and you would of RUN cctv shotgun cable for a neater installation!
You would have BNC to the back of the DVR and then a transformer to power the cameras, you can get 240v cameras but they would need a local spur :)

IP Cameras can be POE but do check the power consumption, and you will need a POE switch that can power them of course... I have only seen this work in PRO AV scenarios, cannot comment on putting all together from ebay items though.
