Black and White Game Cube

I know that this is not an X-box query but seeing as there is no Gamecube section I thought I would throw it in here, see if anyone can help me.
I have just taken ownership of a Japenese Gamecube. It has beeen switched like the old Snes so that it can take Jap and USA games. However it came with composite leads and when i use these I get a black and white picture. If I were to get a RGB scart lead for an N64 would that give me a colour picture as the connection on the back looks the same. I have read about NTSC/PAL convertors and seen them for sale for £60 but that seems a bit extreme. I used to own a USA Snes and it played in colour through the scart.

Sounds to me that the lead is shite. I'm sure you can just buy a replacement 3rd party lead and it will be fine, or try the N64 one. I had a problem like this before with my Dreamcast years ago through the SVHS lead, however got a new composite lead and it was fine
