starting to read into feed hunting for things that may transmit for a temporary time rather than fixed tv channels

does anyone use their 5420 to do this and if so what is the best method? would blind scan, auto navigation or advanced search be the most productive to do daily scans without filling the tp memory or ruining channel lists?

thanks

It's 5402 just to let you know as you post 5420 on all forums lol
Feed hunting is best done by blindscan, first back up channel lists.
After you ahve feed replace channel list.
Feed sites are much easier to use than searching yourself as they have teams.

Hi badman56,

I do this quite a lot mate on my TM 5402 HD

You cannot feedhunt using 'Auto Navigation' or 'Advanced Search' as those options only utilize pre-installed transponder frequencies... therefore the only option is to use the 'Blind Search' scanner... however... this feature has never worked properly/accurately on the TM 5402 HD... the same can also be said about the 'Blind Search' scanner on all of the other 'newer generation' Technomate receivers... I have been asking for ages for the 'Blind Search' scanner to be fixed...

https://www.digitalworldz.co.uk/index.php?threads/189899/#215

The main problem with the 'Blind Search' scanner on the 'newer generation' Technomate receivers is the tendancy to keep missing/not finding a lot of TP's... it does not react very well to TP's with very low symbol rates (and feeds usually use very low ones) and it also has a tendancy to allocate 45000 symbol rates to TP's (with very low symbol rates) it has just located/scanned in... which is not good either...

If you don't want to interfere with/mess up your current satellite positions, TP's and channels... what I suggest you do is... set up a new satellite position on your receiver just for feedhunting... and when you have finished the feedhunting session you can then simply delete all of the TP's on the new dedicated satellite position and use it again for the next feedhunting session on another satellite...

If you do happen to come across a feed TP that you would like to permanently save... simply write down the TP's frequency/polarity/symbol rate... then add it into your TP list on the corresponding stored satellite position...

I hope this helps...

Best Wishes,
Zorch

Hi badman56,

Ooops... I forgot to mention how you use the new dedicated feedhunting satellite position without your dish zooming off all over the place when you are using either DiSEqC/USALS positioning methods...

When you are parked on the satellite you are going to scan... simply go into the Motorized Setting menu and set DiSEqC Motor to OFF then save the changes... you can re-enable your previous positioning method in the same way when you want to move to another satellite...

Now you can use your new dedicated feedhunting satellite position by simply selecting that position and start scanning as normal...

Zorch

thanks for this ill give it a go on my 5402 and not my 5420 - apologies manic

one more thing ive read the manual over n over and i know how to delete channels but all the tps seem to remain there - is there an easy way to delete tps on the 5402 or should i simply load a blank channel list with no channels or tp but jus the satelites made on clarke tech for example ?

and also what step/range do you recommend in the blind search - the default one im assuming?

Hi again badman56,

It's very simple to delete TP's mate...

Menu > Installation > Advanced Search > scroll through and highlight TP you want to delete > press Yellow button > Warning !! Do you want to delete? > select yes > then scroll to the next TP you want to delete etc etc > press Exit when you have deleted all the TP's you want to delete > Saving... Please wait !!

Zorch

ahh Advanced Search isnt something ive used yet - ok thanks bro for all the advice

man this box is buggy as hell isnt it...its not making it easy to learn anything - i just did a blind scan on 30 W no problem then decided to try 19.2 and it got NOTHING - then i went back to 30 W to have a look at the channels No or Bad Signal on every channel even though obviously they do work - turned off the box everything still no signal

so i had to reload a working channel list and wait until it DECIDED to open a channel then start again ... ive read so much negativity about the software on the 5402 and now im really starting to see why

i understand we should leave well enough alone and not be using phantom patches etc but still... if they offer a satellite system with a blind scan it should at least work!

Hi badman56,

To the best of my knowledge... there are no feeds on 19.2°E

Feeds can disappear in the blink of an eye mate... so whatever feeds you found on 30.0°W were most probably finished and gone by the time you had scanned 19.2°E and then gone back to 30.0°W

Zorch

Hi again badman56,

These are the satellites to scan for feeds...

that helps a lot mate nice one ill check them out tonight - yeh i meant nothing as in no channels opening - the usual motor stuck story

i took your advice btw and have gone with the 117 patch - seems to have made things a bit more stable but i cant be happy with a channel list lol - im constantly trying new ways to make 100% sure ive got every channel there is but now ive decided to be happy with what ive got and try to figure out how to keep up with new tps etc

anyway thats off topic - ill be sure to post any findings and thanks for your help as ever

The TM5402HD is ok to start you off finding feeds as is the TM5302HD but to get a more feeds an AZBox Premium+ & TM6900HD take a lot of beating followed closely by the Spiderbox 9000HD,
As has been mentioned here several time the 5402HD throws up 45.000 s/r when a low symbol rate is in use :Mad2:

I have given up on Intelsat 901 @18 west, Intelsat 903 @ 34.5 west,
Intelsat 14 @ 45 west @ Intelsat 9 @ 58 west
as these satellites are due to be replaced soon & are currently inactive for feeds in my location.

The most productive parts of the Ku band are 10950 to 11200 + 11450 to 11700 + 12500 to 12750,
Some feed satellites use more of the spectrum 10 east uses 10700 to 11700 + 12500 to 12750,

I will provide a list of the active parts of the Ku band for all satellites
53 east to 58 west if members think this will be useful ?

i second Zorch's praise for that Merlin thats a great guide there - as for the patch chopps i tried 112 and strangely the same thing happened straight away i got a No signal on all channels on a satellite i changed to - albeit i was under duress from the wife so didnt really test any more before resorting back to 117 but yeh that 112 solution actually pulled up the same problem but i will try it again later - youd also said id lose the program planner ? but that remained too so maybe i need to first install the official patch Zorch gave me for the 112 as id just installed the 117 official then the 117 phantom

heres probably a dumb question but its never stopped me before lol - how do you identify a "feed" when doing a blind search? im slowly starting to learn (through doing comprehensive Favourites lists) what channels ive got on each satellite but is it a case of scanning then viewing after to see what youve got or is there a way of saying "ahh look theres a feed" when doing the blind search

using Merlin and Zorch's frequency guides will help me to identify the sorts of frequency ranges to expect feeds but just wondering if theres any common words or acronyms that would accompany the name of a feed - i found a couple which are multi coloured screens and have something about "London News" on them but i found myself thinking is this a feed or not

Feed id's such as Arqiva - SIS - Overon - GlobeCast - GCF - GCUK- are a guide that you are receiving a feed some feeds just use codes GCF003 - AP Direct - Service 01-ARQ ATL ENC 3 - Multi 6 BU - Fi07WSHT - DX01 50Hz ect ect ,
Feed Satellites normally use low symbol rates such as 3125, 5632,6111, 6666 ect but also use larger symbol rates such as 16500 26800 27500 so a clue to receiving feeds is the fact that the feed will disappear when the transmission has finished whereas a normal tv broadcast will not.

below is a Ku band feed guide for 53 east to 58 west:

53 east Express AM22 11000 to 11120 + 11520 to 11700

06:56 to 07:54 UTC 7:56 to 8:54 BST,

Some feeds do appear on normal broacast transponders such as:
28.2 east 11052H 22000 + 11487V 27500
13 east HB-9 11317V 27500
13 east HB-8 12437H 27500

4.8 east Astra 1E 10758V 22500
5 west 12543H 27500
30 west 10770H 27500 + 10810H 30000

Some Satellites only use one polarization on certain Ku bands,
Where this is known I have indicated V=Vertical & H=Horizontal.

16 east has recently been using 12500 to 12550 H for German Sat feeds.

hi all i was wondering if it was ever worth deleting all sats, and starting again from scratch on the 5402. are there any benefits to be gained, for example "to stop the dish zooming off all over the place" etc.

I do it quite a bit actually, probably once a month.
I use a spreadsheet from Jetsetw which grabs all the transponders from kingofsat or lyngsat, upload it to the TM, then leave the box doing a navigation scan for a few hours. Then I copy my favourites back in to the resulting cndf and I'm happy for a month. I select all beams and include feeds so at least even if there's nothing broadcasting when I do my scan, the TP's are there for later.

Benefits? Up to date channels list, and a warm feeling that everything is tidy. Maybe I have OCD?
