I had the exact same problem but ended up havng to buy a Cypress board and Jtag it.

I dont understand that, if images are flashing as they are in this case but the box is stuck in starting mode then the bootloader is still working and no jtag is needed why it worked for you no idea.

It was a while ago so you may well be right, it may have just been stuck on "starting" and not allowing me to flash an image.
