r4 card and ds roms

I am considering getting a nintendo 3ds for kids for christmas.Is there the latest game roms still available and do r4 cards work anyomre.Any help appreciated .Thanks

The kids are only 4 and 6 yrs old so .I might just go for a ds lite for them for now.What`s the best card for a ds lite please?
