Hi are there any tutorials of putting dd wrt on the vm dlink modem?

checked the site and there are loads of versions. Want to use the dlink router as a wireless switch type thing to extend wifi signal and use roaming on it from original router.

Is that the dir-615d router ?

If so, then its pretty easy. You just load the VxWorks killer program first and then the dd-wrt version thats compiled for the router.

Think there's actually a readme somewhere on the dd-wrt site that takes you through doing it as you have to completely reset the router to system defaults so your likely to need to set the PC to various static IP addresses as you as you progress through the different stages.

I did it on a DIR-615 Hardware revision D4. There was 2 files to download off the dd-wrt website for this model.

Downloaded them both and then just flashed it through the admin panel with the initial image, then reflashed it with the 2nd image... All as per instructions on the download page for this model.

This is only for this model, the procedure varies between makes and models so make sure you get the info right for yours.

Hi ya,

Sorry to intrude but i was browsing through and come accross your problem.

This might not what you want but i've done something similar to my dlink 615.

I put ddwrt on my dlink so i can extend my (MAIN AP) wireless rouer which is based upstairs and put the dlink downstaires which makes it a WIRELESS BRIDGE. I now have two routers working and i now have more access downstairs example:- four more ethernet ports instead of running 30 meters of cable from upstairs to downstairs.

Like i said hope this helps and here is a link

That's exactly what I'm after, I don't mind if its wired as I have the infrastructure already there. I've still not had the chance to even attempt it but will do soon, one weekend. Thank you.

This is annoying me now, cant get it working.

I have put the firmware v24 sp2 (11/21/10) std

Disabled WAN connection.

My sky router is 192.168.01 so i set the local IP on the ddwrt router as 192.168.1.2.
Subnet mask on both routers as 255.255.255.0
I put gateway and local DNS as 192.168.0.1 (sky router IP) in the ddwrt router.

I ran a normal network cable from the sky router (LAN port1) to the Internet port in the ddwrt router.

Any ideas?

Basically what im trying to do is use it as a switch but also have wifi coming out of it. So i can connect to the ddwrt router with my laptop.

I have done this, used the dlink with ddwrt as a standard switch and worked first time for me, let me take screen shots of my router so it will assist you

here are the screen shot of my settings in the attachments

just cross reference your settings with mine

I normally click APPLY first and then SAVE - not sure if it makes a difference which way option you click first

The wifi on this router is a different SSID and on the other side of the channel

so my main router with cable model connected is on channel 1 and this dlink one, channel is 10 - different SSID but use same WPA key. Could not get Windows do proper roaming on wifi so decided on different SSID's

It may be best to also get router back to default settings then apply my configurations

The settings in the screen shot are

SETUP --> BASIC SET UP and ADVANCED ROUTING

SERVICES --> SERVICES

SECURITY --> FIREWALL

do you mean you cant access the dlink ddwrt router admin page

its either this

if you did the reset to default settings, then most likely the IP address of the dlink router has been assigned by DHCP - I would run netscan (free application) to scan your subnet and it should pick up the dlink router.

or this

disconnect the dlink router from the other sky router

plug network cable from pc/laptop into the dlink router (therefore this creates an isolated network) then connect to the dlink router on IP 192.168.1.1 and change IP to 192.168.1.2 or what ever IP address you want to assign the dlink router then reconnect dlink router back intot he sky router and reconnect pc/desktop to the normal network

edit again:

it found ip as 192.168.1.2 but cant access that via browser

I've isolated the router.
Plugged the dlink into the pc via ethernet.
When i do ipconfig the ip of the default gateway comes up as the ip of the sky router even tho its not connected.

Error is page cannot be displayed like its not there. Cant even ping it. For some reason the dlink is transmitting the sky router ip address as its own.

is the ip address on the PC dynamic or dhcp

I would set the ip address on the pc dynamic

ip 192.168.1.10
subnet 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.2

ping the dlink router and if you get a successful return try to web admin page again

All sorted now mate.

just reset to defaults and did it over again.
Got my sky router as 192.168.0.1, ddwrt as 192.168.0.250
and everything in between including the dreamboxes.
Set up port forward on the sky router and all working.
Got one dreambox attached to sky router and the other to the ddwrt and did a test and all good. All the devices are just seeing the sky router and nothing else. so its like the sky router has 8 ports. Thanks for all your help mate much appreciated.

as the second dlink router is now a standard switch/hub and not a router, so its the sky router they all see as its that device that routes the IP packets and the dlink router just forwards it onto the sky router (if that makes sense)

did my screenshots I posted earlier help you in getting it sorted

once you are comfortable with ddwrt then it can do some advanced stuff like on my router I noticed alot of IP addresses trying to hack into my network - so I just added these ip addresses to be dropped on the router .. also if you have a syslogd server on your network - u can send all info to it, very useful so u can see hackers trying to attempt a attack and I even got my dreambox with newcs sending debug info to the central syslogd server - so all in one place and I can see everything thats happening.
