I have just had a call from o2 say in that i can have the nokia n95 phone if i want it but i would like to know what it is like, i have the n91 at the mo and i don't think much of it.

Thanks i have had a look at but there going to say that it the best and all that crap, i would like to know what it is like to use from some one that has it.

n95

my friend has the n95, i think the phones amazin, the quality on the video camera is like that of a devoted video camera, and looks good not bulky liked you would expect for all that spec, if you get it and dont like it just sell it and makes $$$,

Hi M8
How much have you got to pay for the phone and what tariff is it on
Hope you don't mind me asking

its a excellent phone

but the phone does crash and somtimes quite slow.

the inbuilt sat nav is not free, and you cant runrun tomtom using the internal gps yet, you can use a external one

the camera is good, but not the best, i still think sony ericsson w800i is better.

your best bet is to get the phone, and if you dont like it you will make £400 straight away from ebay.

I have one of these coming tomorrow from Voda.

However after reading around I have found out that Voda have disabled the VOIP function of the phone! Not to worry as hopefully it will have an older firmware on it and I can debrand it to get that function back ;)

BUT.....

I have been reading around and apparently Voda are going to charge to use VOIP over Wifi! Surely this can't be right or am I getting mixed up here?

I was planning on using Truphone on it until a lot of site's mentioned that Voda will be charging for the privilige! ANd checking the Voda site told me this!:

VODA SITE

(Taken from bottom Conditions Of Use)

The £1 per day charge and monthly data subscription cannot be used for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services such as Skype or Peer-to-Peer services (such as instant messenger services, text messaging clients or file sharing). These services will not count towards the £1 per day charge or monthly bundle, and are charged separately at £2 per MB, with a 5p minimum charge for each data session.

You can connect your laptop or PDA to the internet on the £1 per day plan or web browsing bundle. You will, however, use more of your MB allowance using a laptop than a phone. Laptop users should consider our 3G Broadband Mobile Connect card.

!!!!! Can they even do that, I mean I pay for my internet so why should Voda get money for me using my WiFi !!!!!

Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

Different firmwares have enabled / disabled features. Voda for sure, and I think Orange are the worst.
The voip on Voda is true. They have tried to make you use their services for voip. Much the same as the N80.
This is easily "get aroundable". There has just been a firmware update released from Nokia. You can fool the server into thinking your N95 is a generic one. This makes Nokias server update your phone with the latest firmware AND debrand it at the same time. This then allows proper VOIP access along with that it runs faster, uses less battery, loses the crappy orange icons and splash screens.

I know about debranding the phone Blartiartfast ;)

I just can't see how Voda can charge you for using VOIP over your own WiFi that you already pay your ISP for!

:(

Also with the N95 only just coming into stock I hope it hasn't already got Voda's crappy update on it which would stop me upgrading/debranding to the latest generic one if the version match.....

Sorry didn't mean to sound condesending (hope its spelt right I've been on the brandy)
It is in their selfish interest to make you pay for voip. Like I mentioned earlier I tried for 3 months to get my N80 to work with my completely free Voip service....It was having none of it. The N95 was made to be different. It would allow SIP to work properly and the way it was intended. Sadly, the providers have had their own ideas regarding this.

just got a new deal with t-mobile upgrade, 3 months early.

N95 free
flext 50 web & walk
(1200mins or 2400 texts and internet browsing included. nb not downloads)
free weekend calls to anytime network anytime. (not out your free mins)
Free landline calls always (upto 36,000 mins per month)
Insurance next day replacement

all for £66.50 inc VAT

with deals like this, u won't even need sykpe to call out on.

These deals can only be got from the retention teams, don't bother with the upgrade or customer service departments.

I'm a high user, so this deal saves me alot of money.

I kept mine for a couple of weeks then told them it was faulty to get a new replacement which I could sell sealed in its box. They EAT batteries, even locked into GSM only, Bluetooth off, wifi off in fact everything that makes it a good phone I got between 6-18 hours (YES 6 HOURS), and that's in areas with a very strong signal! As has been mentioned the phone is also very slow. Mine was completely unbranded and never locked. The GPS is free to use (contrary to a comment here) but if you want voice navigation and some extended search functions you can buy various packages, I had a free 3 year bundle with mine (normal price £47.95) but I was able to use it before I got the code to unlock it. Make sure you download the maps (free from Nokia) direct to a card or the phone via USB or wifi and keep the access settings on the phone to wifi only. Personally I still think that SE have the best version of the Symbian software, I have a W950 and replaced the N95 with a P990i (much maligned but the latest update has fixed most of the quibbles) they beat the living **** out of the N95 . The camera on the Nokia has plenty of pixels but an led flash!! so still beaten by the K800. also the camera software in common with most of the applications on the phone is SLOW. The speed issues may have been addressed in the recent firmware update. Oh, and my battery life with each of these phones with nothing turned off is 48 hours plus!

I must be lucky, I have had mine around a week now and have nothing but good things to say about it.

I'm on FW V11.0.023. Upgraded it myself from the first VODA CRIPPLEWARE as soon as I got it. Got it looked ugly with that sh!te on it, talk about make you see red!!!! lol

Had a few PM's about this so here goes

You don't have to send the phone away to update the software m8

Go to here and enter your product code to see if any updates are availiable (found underneath your battery ;)

Then just connect your phone to your PC with USB cable and let it update. Job done!

OR

If you want to remove the crappy VODA branding, or any other branding for that matter skip the above and download Nemesis Software Suite FIRST from here. (You'll fin it at the bottom of the page ;)

Then you connect it to your phone and click the SCAN FOR NEW DEVICE button.

Once it's found your device click on the PHONE INFO button where you will then find a box with product code written next to it. This is where you enter the ORIGIONAL NOKIA product code for your handset.

The N95's UK product codes for unbranded firmware are:

0534841 - For the Sand N95
0536062 - For the Plum N95

So depending on the colour of your hanset you would enter either 0534841 or 0536062 into the product code box then tick the ENABLE box next to that and finally click the WRITE button.

Now when you run the Nokia Software updater it checks your phones product code, see's that it is an origional Nokia (As you just changed it to one...lol) and updates your phone with the latest ORIGIONAL UNBRANDED Firmware that is a lot faster and stable than the network provided, horrible looking branded crap.

I must advise you though that all this is done at your own risk, and it may invalidate your phone's warranty.

But saying that, it is well worth it! ;)

so if i click on get it, it will put in on my phone for me? will i need to take the sd card out?

It sure will m8, I never took my memory card out but then again I had nothing on it. You could take it out if you like but you need to leave your sim card in ;)

Out of curiosity are you just doing a normal upgrade, or are you going to unbrand it?

:)

EDIT: Just seen your post above. That's because your operator hasn't released any crappy updates yet. Try one of the unbranded codes I gave you to get the origional NOKIA FW ;)

You will have to change your product code with NSS though like I said above to update it.

:)
