I had a call from an old customer today. He has internet via satellite (Tooway) with UK IP address, so has been able to stream BBC & ITV etc. since they went to Astra's UK beam. But just today he got a message asking if he has a licence, and for the address to which it is registered. Neither of which he has of course.
Seems they do mean business, I just wonder how long it will be now before they start on all the illegal IPTV sharks.

not if you live in Scotland.
there are no trespass laws up here..

they have every right to knock on your door.
of course, you have every right to ignore it.. ;)

yeah i knew that bit also kinda old info but thought maybe worth a look for some i get selective hearing when they knock lol

Yet more drivel from the organisation.

Clearly the sample of "young people" is as carefully chosen as are the participants in Question Time.

Buzzer mate we can still use this law . The wording of the letter has to be changed slightly but if you live in a house with a garden and it has a gate you can use some scottish act that was brought in 2003 I think where you have the right to refuse entry . Basically brought in for land owners but can be used in this manner . People need to just remember the TV thugs that come to your door are only sales people they have no law enforcement powers . Don't answer any questions politely close the door . Also if a letter comes in saying to the occupier it means they have no idea of who you are . Another thing they can't enter your home without a warrant . In Scotland no one has went to jail for not paying this . From what I've read judges see this as a waste of courts time .

I had a couple of thugs at the door when only the missus was in, she says they were really threating, trying to get in.
I phoned them up and went mental about it.

to cut a long story short,
i told them i was revoking their right of access.

they said, as there is no trespass laws in Scotland they couldn't accept it and they have every right to approach a door..

anyways, i havn't heard from them since them, think it was around 2 year ago now..

coonts.. :)

Ive never had a TV License, had them knock my door a few times. As always, I say the same things.

1. Do you have a warrant to enter my premise?
2. Then feck off!
3. Close door
4. Rinse and repeat

The license is a civil offence and not a criminal one I believe, they cannot legally enter your property without a warrant, which of course they cannot obtain as they are not the police.

Also, the iplayer thing already has a loophole allowing students to watch the iplayer stuff for free. Was in the papers ;)

No mate it's a criminal law . It's a criminal court you go to ,but in Scotland atleast the courts have been going easy on people small fines and you can't be jailed for not paying a fine of under £500

No warrant, no entry, simple. They cannot prove shizzle unless you admit it, or let them in.

They can mate if you have virgin / sky subs ect being honest I just pay it not worth the hassle .

They cant enter your premise, and therefore cannot prove if you're watching anything. You only pay for BBC stuff, cable/sky is irrelevant.

Honestly, I dont have a TV license, never have. As always, I tell them no warrant no entry. Ive never had any comebacks from them.

Old article but principal is the same

They can ask your isp if you are using iplayer. They have done it with torrents ect. I don't think it's right but they can do it. At least internet wise

What they done with me.
When I moved into my property I paid the tv tax. After awhile I cancelled the direct debit. As it was setup for every 3 months.
After all the letters and all rest of s*ite.
They wrapped my door twice in the space of one week. This would of been roughly 2 months after I stopped paying the tv tax.
they never wrapped the door again but around one week later I got a letter saying they were about to start court proceedings.
For peace sake I rung them up and said I will setup new direct debit.
During the call the dirt on the other end of the phone said I MUST PAY for the two months as they never got the payments.
I then told them that I was not living there for two months.
(NOTHING THEY COULD DO)

Still to this day I'm forced to pay for something I DO NOT want.
If I love movies... I pay for it.
If I love sports.... I pay for it.
The two above give you the option to pay or not.

As as far as that outfit in the BBC goes pay if you like it or not.
As I said in a previous post.......
"in the years to come we will all be asking how they got away with charging people for something they don't want. Then being criminalised if you don't pay"

Lets hear how much the BBC presenters get paid with all the addons and directors wages.
Yet they won't disclose that!!!!
Amazing as we pay there big wages!!!

How would they know who your isp is? Asking an isp for details on how a customer is using their services would need a court order surely?
Why don't the scum just change iplayer registrations so that the licence details are part of the login process. Wouldn't be perfect, but nothing about this tv tax is.

I stopped paying my licence a couple of years ago after reading a thread on this forum. With what I pay to Sky and Virgin each month I feel that I'm already paying more than enough for my tv/ internet pleasures.

It's FUD.

As has been proven in numerous other cases, an IP does not prove the geo-location of the occupant or user, and these can been spoofed. Read the article above, gives a much better account than I can.
