DM800hd purchase and setup advice.

Wizbit, the usb power stays on when the box is in stanby that is why people don't use the usb.

The thing is, the fans need to stay on for a legnth of time after the box is switched off or put into standby,
what you have to understand is that the cpu and tuner were working full turn until you power it down,
even though they currently arent working, they will still be as hot as a whistle. so removing cool air away from it is a sure fire way to rape your hot components.

so the fans need to stay on for a couple of minutes after putting into standby.

So effectively what you are saying is that it needs power all the time and a thermostatic switch near to one of the hot components.
So digi's way is the best.
If taking power from pin 8 on the scart is it marked? Or do you count from top at one end....
Cheers

I think Digi's method would be best indeed,
although i think somebody mentioned that you cant connect to the scart pin and theres an easier source of power somewhere,

i thought you said you had a NAS hdd.
why are you wanting to burn excess cash on a hdd?
if you still want to go that route then that same hdd is 40 quid in amazon and buy a 3.5" sata enclosure off ebay for a tenner.

Crazy.

i do have a nas but havnt worked out if you can actually use it to record from the box across net work people were talking about using them as a epg?

Its a lot of data to shift across a lan to a nas? Im still not sure its actually possible..

No harm in asking though is there dude/!

You are better not using a Nas, or a hard drive for the epg, there would be a delay and then having the hard drive spin up for just the epg, better using a usb stick for epg and picons and hard drive just for recording.

For mounting your Nas, google this,

/etc/rcS.d/S90netmount.sh

And try the first link,

see if that gets you anywhere.

So u can use a nas for recording? but not for epg?

but i still cant work out how its beter across a lan than across esata or usb 2 interface?

and that still looks well beyond me!?

Im off tomorrow and have a mystora device with 2 x 1tb drives in

you can use it for both.
but if your using a drive that spins round and round (like they do)
there will be a short delay while it heats up.

Goose68 is recommending a USB stick for your epg so lag is not an issue and you can see the epg as soon as you flick channels.

there is nothing you can do about the delay with regards to recording because all external hdd's and internal ones are spin up ones.
it's like when you try to open up a folder on your computer after leaving it to idle for a few mins, the second or two delay is what you will get.

Personally i would rather have my hard drive spinning up for recording, or watching, not spinning up just for an epg. I'm not saying you are better to use lan rather than Usb/e-sata, but if you already have the equipment then i don't see the point in spending more. If you do use a Nas then you can stream etc to and from it, rather than ftp'ing files to your dm and back again.

if your NAS is already running then you might aswell use that for your epg too.
if i had one, i would have it running 24/7 for torrents so the box can have epg immediately as the drive is all spooled up already.

yeah its all a bit beyond me that part!

i can see my nas from the dreambox but i cant get it record to it.

yes as i said above ..........time shift not possible......

I would imagine coz the naz is in ntfs?

the link above some one sent me is well beyond me!
