A New Idea to protect your Ambit 250 !!!!

Sorry my post wasnt to clear . Im a tad exited right now .
Ok what I did was romoved Pin 11 frim the PCB . Now that was bloody hard ,
connected it to Vcc via 100R resistor .
Booted modem with no HCF connection
Tried to change mac adress ,, was unable
As for re-soldering the pin . Not at this time . its dissconnected from the PCB and connected to Vcc via 100R resistor .
So far still sitting at 20Mb download

cheers mate and good work, i remember there being a similar tric for the ambit 100/120 but if i recall corrctly you dont need to remove the pin just connect a wire to it

Cheers for the info adam

Wasnt sure if it would cause a problem with pin 11 still connected to PCB

I may give that a try later ..

Now online over a few hours still 100 %

i take it your test 250's are infinite, with default user/pass and serial number?

otherwise wouldnt see the point in testing em

Hi all
I rem this trick verry well
I broke 2 modems trying it but no joy
Pin had to be lifted and connected to the place on the header for jtag
If pin werent lifted it wouldnt work
Prob was it didnt last long
It was to stop the firmware update to the new ntl logo

Ok an update

I left the modem on all night last night , and on checking it this morning it was off line ..
Fearing the worst I quickly rebooted it , and to my joy it worked .

I then setup the max232 cable and yes I can still press “p”

So in reflection I think this is the way I am going to use from now on . !!

I’m going to keep pin 11 off the pcb and connected to Vcc via the 100R Resistor .

Still have more tests planned for the weekend on this setup . I will try it with another mac tonight when I get home from work

Cheers

Yeah its probably only offline because thats what happens in certain areas. After a day or so, or a certain amount of data downloaded, the modem just stops and goes to 1kb up 1kb down. Sometimes a day, sometimes 3 days or longer. As i said in previous forums this used to happen to me. And it used to happen irrelevant of the mac i used, some longer than others though. But adam's fw alleviated this.

I think there must be an easier way though. Some kind of modchip lol that just clips on. I'm sure that wouldn't bee too complex to make. Similar to the clips that can clip on to the atmels in the digiboxes but obviously with the relevant modifications inside.

I hear ya :)

I wasnt doing any DL last night just left it connected to my laptop :)

Now A mod chip :) .

Just wonder hos hard that would be . Well its Friday and a bit quiet at work today . I I recon that will give me something to look into today :)

Cheers my good man

Have a good one

Good luck mate, hope my suggestions can help steer things in the right direction. With my limite knowledge suggestions are all i can make. But everything always starts with an idea! :-D

Yes it is
But this way will stop any new attacks our lovely isp will try to come up with
And so far so good :)

Not really .. it will only stop attacks based on writing to the modem.

There is PLENTY they could do without changing the modem

Locking MAC to UBR
Blacklisting LAN MAC address
Updating firmware on LEGAL modems and making changes required
BPI+

Blacklisting lan mac address? What century are you in lol. Never heard of SMAC/TMAC?
I think those things you mentioned are just plucked out of various peoples messages and just in theory. As opposed to being based on any firm knowledge

I have an old ambit 100 with this mod from a year or 2 ago.
I was think about write protecting the chip in the willem but to change mac would be a pain.
good work tho dude

yeah remember that mod a year or 2 ago m8 ...im sure you had to take the wire off vcc and reconnect back to pad 11 ...when you had to put new mac back in
