Xbox newbie here, some advice please....

the lad has asked santa for an xbox this year.

so i was wondering about a few things.

1. how easy is it to mod an xbox to play backups?
2. is there a certain model i should buy?(are some models easier than others to mod)?
3. are there diffrent methods of modding (hardmod/softmodding etc and which is easiest/most reliable)
4. can he go online with a modded box (not too important tbh, he is 6, dont fancy him playing C.O.D with some 40 year old lol)
5. i'm presuming modding a box will void warrenty, am i better buying second hand?

any help appreciated...

I'm in the same situation Buzzer, He's 6 and is bored of the PS3 and all his mates have a xbox360 - don't want to hijack so i'm off to start my own thread !
