Not any more, there ate diskless exploits availble for all versions wii now.

Easiest way is to use modmii

I modded 2 wiis, by sd card ,then u put games on hard drive , in the usb slot, one was version 3.4u the other 4 .something, I found the older the wii ,the easiesr it was to mod ,
