why no "0,1 2, p" options when power up N*L250?

yeah, I bought a pre-flashed modem, as hoad no max232 originally!!

am seeing the '1' '2' or 'p', so would seem that the modem is working, just not accepting/seeing the command when I press keyboard.

so, yes could be a problem with either hyperterminal (but using the correct settings, and able to view using hyperterminal, so I think unlikely) or it could be my max232 circuit board or conenctions between it and modem pins.

I;ve pulled out the pins and all look like they are fully down in plug, so should be making good contact with each pin on circuit boards?

then the problem is ur max

the max circuit board fried?

any way to check?
try this from Chartman and mark370

Max 232/233 loopback tester is for testing your max232/233 to make sure its working correctly...

Use this to test any com port/ comport interface by connecting TX and RX Together on your max232.233.
I use this for testing my max 232 interfaces. ( won't work on black cat- that's parallel).
Just save the software somewhere and run it.
There is a test string in the data bar at the top .
Put the cursor there and press return.
Without loopback ( or faulty) you will just see 1234567 in ONE colour.
If the loopback is connected and all is working fine, you will see the TX string in one colour and the RX string in a different colour, so you will see 12345671234567.
You can change the baud rate to anything you want but it is set to default to 115,200. Don't F*** with anything else or it will all go pearshaped! You have been warned.!

so I started that application, attached the max232 to laptop via USB to serial cable and ran the script from top window in that application.

here is what I got in bottom window, all in blue colour

[STX] [DC4] [SOH] VDU [BEL] 001234567 [CR] [ETX]

from what you said, this means that

this mean my max232 is fried?

If so, anyone explain how this could happen - also where to get a replacement ;(

iv been having the same problem...i tried to do my dads internet and i had two modems which did not have the option of the 'P' so i could not get into the modem, so iv got two modems here lying around and i dont no what to do with them lol

well through hyperterminal it shows this when booting up:

the "built by alex" I think somebody says is the image that gets downloaded by N*L to disable the 'p' option, to prevent you fiddlin'

check out earlier in this thread or search for the "built by: alex) in forum, will give you an answer.

stupid question time - how did you complete a dump of hyperterminal text, tried last night and failed dismally!!

your log shows its taken the new update built by alex build date 2007 if the MAC is still working your modem should still have net access if you want to re-flash it there is 2 ways so far one is to lift the chip of the board and re program it with a wiliem and the other is to grind the bottom of the board and j-tag it & run blackcat to give the modem a new bootloader.

dont know if your still having problems, but if you ever have the p option, are pressing it quick enough but it dont seem to be working, always check to make sure scroll lock (on the keyboard) is turned off!

has this j-tag for the 250 been confirmed as working yet? i havnt seen any solid proof yet only claims and counter claims!

so I started that application, attached the max232 to laptop via USB to serial cable and ran the script from top window in that application.

can anyone confirm that max232 definitely the problem, based on above test result?

to be 100% sure, just try it on another modem m8 if u have a subbed try the max on it

that makes sense.

with a N*L supplied modem, what should I see when connecting a max232 to its circuit board (i.e. presume the boot up is different, and don't get the 1, 2 or p option?

am away from home at the mo, but will try on Sunday.

so finally tested my subbed modem - same problem.

when I change my networj adapter IP, open hyperterminal... I can see the subbed modem boot up, giving the 1/2/p options, but not accepting any keystorkes.

nased on all feedback (thanks everyone), it seems my max232 board is fried.

Does this happen easily /often?

Anyone recommend wher I can get a cheap replacement?

Cheers

May i ask who or where you got your max232 from m8 ? as you could maybe swap it for a working one ? just a thought, other than that there is a few options you could go for either replace the chip on the board or part thats faulty or even build your own m8 i would suggest the 233 as they are easier to build and more stable than a 232 chip all the parts can be found at maplins not very expensive either.

got the max232 from a member from this site. was only £7, and did work once upon a time.

can you advise what are the parts in Maplins, as there's one down the road from me in Dublin.

Cheers

Ive seen a few diffrent people show proof with pics m8 and i have tried my self 3 times but the first 2 didnt power up very well lol i was 3rd time lucky tho that did power up and read the chip but didnt get to far as i we had a power outage in the village so modem ended up like a cabbage no brain so left it at that m8 sorry i couldnt be more helpful. if i do ever go ahead and try that agian i will soon post my findings for all to see.

Ahhh sounds like you got it from wayneeboy (hope i spelt his name right) he's a well known member m8 and has a good rep for his max hardware. I made my own 232 & 233 both with parts from maplins there is a few tuts about somewhere showing how easy it is ive added a few pics that might help you in the right direction to making your own max232/233.

Description: MAX3232CPE Code: DT26D

Description: MAX233CPP Code: NR45Y

Thats the codes for Maplins for the 232 & 233 chip m8.

had mine for a very long time from wayneeboy and it was working great until today when it wont work on my 5101 i think i might of fried it, but then again that could be down to my dodgy soldering lol. al find out 2moro!!! but contact wayneeboy he might sort u out with a chip or something he's good like that...

he's already advised to just head to Maplins and pick up a replacement chip, even gave me the stock code!!

Top lad!

maplins chips dont always work.
when i made my first 1 i went throught 7 chips from maplins before i could get it to work. worked on a 232 chip instead of the 233.

there should be a post on the forums somewhere where you can send away to the manufacturers for a sample. i got 18 chips this way, fook knows where they have went to but they lyin around here somewhere

here u go m8 found the link for 233
https://shop.maxim-ic.com/storefron...t=Sample&menuitem=Sample&Partnumber=MAX233CPP

check here for more samples
