which update/cart 3ds?

a m8 of mine has just come back from being abroad and brought a few r4i carts back with him lol, anyway there a red r41 with a pic of mario on it and says firmware 1.6 on it, ive done a quick google search and cant see any of them.
the bloke who he bought them off told him they work fine on 3ds but all he gets when he clicks on it is a error coming up on the screen.

do these need a new update to get them to work or has he been scammed?

realy depends on the card and the console m8...

need to knoe exactly what card he has and what console.

all it says on the cart is r4i card and has a red lable with a small pic of mario bros on the side of it and in a star it says firmware 1.6 and he needs it to work on a 3ds but knows you cant play 3d games yet via the cart

is there any web adddress on the card of packaging?

did the cards come preloaded with firmware or games?
