tar.gz files? i'm confused.

hi,pls help... are these tar.gz files just compressed like rar files etc? do i just unpack and rename? ie... usb-update.img.for pen drive,
if not,how do i use these tar.gz files?

They are not flash images.on
My box i have multiboot.nlb on flash and enigma2(tar.gz) on internal hardrive or running from usb stick .u can get enigma 2 images for flash
