Hi guys can somebody help me on this one i have a sony vaio and when i press the power button the lights flash but the laptop doesn't come on at all. The memory is ok and so is the hdd anyone got any ideas. cheers

Can you plug it into an external monitor and try to start up?

Is this under battery power only or with the mains adapter as well.

Are there any beeps when you try to switch it on?

The battery may not be holding charge.

How long do the lights flash for, is it just momentarily or do they flash for a while?

Remove the battery, plug intot the mains and than try switching it on and see what happens.

Heyup mate,

I was thinking maybe a problem with the power controller on the mobo.

same happens i took bat out and plugged into mains and the lights just flashed when i pressed the power button

Had a bit of a google using "sony vaio powering up problems", seems the vaio's have a bit of a problem with this.

Still suspicious of the mobo power control but there seems to be problems with the memory slots or types too.

As muskrat says try removing your RAM and booting and also try removing things like hdd and cd rom and booting.

Remove ram and try to boot and see if the lappy beeps at you, if so count the beeps and post mate.

Sounds like the mobo's buggered mate. Should beep to tell you there's no system memory in.

[EDIT]Could try a bios reset, don't know if it will do any good though but may be worth a go.

Hate to be the bringer of bad news mate but when I was googling prices like £700 were mentioned here http://www.laptop-repairs-london.co.uk/ may be worth having a word with these chaps.

Try a BIOS reset, you've got nothing to lose.

Yep, the beeps are generated by the bios checking the system as it tries to start, the bios is the first thing accessed before any other processes are started so the machine would start to beep almost straightaway after you press the power on button.
